When Lillian Rose arrived at a California animal shelter, she was in terrible shape. The beautiful calico had been struggling to survive on the streets, suffering from severe malnutrition, dehydration, and a painful condition that made even the simple act of eating a challenge.
Despite her obvious need for help, Lillian Rose was at risk of being released right back onto the streets where she had nearly lost her life.
Thankfully, the compassionate rescuers at Furry Friends LA learned about her situation and stepped in to give this sweet girl the second chance she desperately needed.
With help from iHeartCats supporters and Hero VIP Club members, Furry Friends LA was able to provide the specialized veterinary care that would transform Lillian Rose’s life.

A Desperate Plea for a Cat Who Couldn’t Survive on Her Own
Before her rescue, Lillian Rose had reportedly been living outdoors in the San Bernardino area for approximately a year. By the time she was brought to San Bernardino City Animal Shelter, her condition had deteriorated dramatically.
Shelter records described a lethargic, drooling cat who was struggling to walk normally. She was severely malnourished and dehydrated, and it was clear that life on the streets had taken an enormous toll on her fragile body. Yet despite everything she had endured, Lillian Rose remained calm, approachable, and friendly with people.
An emergency plea circulated online, begging someone to intervene before she was returned to the streets. The message was simple but heartbreaking: “She needs your help to survive.”
Fortunately, Furry Friends LA answered that call. But getting Lillian Rose to safety was only the beginning. Her rescuers still needed to determine what was causing her suffering and how they could help her recover.

A Painful Diagnosis Threatened Her Ability to Eat
Veterinary examinations revealed that Lillian Rose was suffering from severe stomatitis, a painful inflammatory condition affecting the tissues inside a cat’s mouth.
For cats with stomatitis, eating can become excruciating. The inflammation may cause excessive drooling, difficulty chewing, loss of appetite, and weight loss. In severe cases, affected cats may struggle to eat enough to maintain their health.
Gene from Furry Friends LA believes Lillian Rose’s condition may have developed following an earlier viral infection.
“The stomatitis is likely from a nasty Calicivirus infection at a younger age which causes chronic inflammation of the mouth,” Gene explained.
Lillian Rose needed specialized dental care, bloodwork, and medication to get her condition under control. But for a small rescue organization working with limited funding, the cost of extensive veterinary treatment can be overwhelming.
Determined to give Lillian Rose the best possible chance, Furry Friends LA arranged for her to receive veterinary care in Mexico, where treatment costs were more manageable.
“Mexico is cheaper and allows us to help more cats with the limited funding we have,” Gene shared.
That decision would prove especially important for Lillian Rose.

A Treatment That Saved More Than Her Life
For cats suffering from severe, treatment-resistant stomatitis, extracting most or all of their teeth is often recommended to help control chronic inflammation and pain. But Lillian Rose’s veterinarian in Mexico suggested another approach.
Rather than immediately pursuing a full-mouth extraction, the veterinarian recommended a medication that Gene described as equivalent to GingiPro.
“And it was the Mexico vet who recommended the GingiPro to save her teeth,” Gene explained.
Thanks to the medication and veterinary care, Lillian Rose responded beautifully to treatment. Her painful oral inflammation improved so significantly that her rescuers were able to avoid removing all her teeth.
As Gene happily put it, “So she gets to keep her choppers.”
Even better, Lillian Rose was finally able to eat comfortably again!

No More Drooling, No More Pain, and a Whole New Personality!
The transformation in Lillian Rose has been remarkable. The once-frail calico who struggled to survive outdoors is now gaining weight, eating kibble, and enjoying life without the constant mouth pain that once plagued her.
“No more drooling!” Gene happily reported.
But perhaps the most heartwarming change is in Lillian Rose’s personality. While she had always shown a gentle nature, being free from pain has allowed her affectionate side to truly blossom.
“She’s extra sweet now that she’s pain-free,” Gene shared, describing her as “cuddly and loving.”
Instead of struggling through each day, Lillian Rose can now enjoy the simple pleasures every cat deserves: a full belly, a comfortable place to rest, and the loving attention of people who care about her.
Her recovery is a beautiful reminder of just how much proper veterinary care can change an animal’s life. And it’s also a reminder of why supporting rescue organizations like Furry Friends LA is so important.
How iHeartCats Supporters Help Make Second Chances Possible
For small rescue groups, every dollar matters. Organizations like Furry Friends LA regularly take in vulnerable cats who need everything from nutritious food and basic supplies to emergency surgery, specialized medication, and ongoing veterinary treatment.
Unfortunately, the cost of caring for these animals can quickly overwhelm a rescue’s limited budget. That’s where iHeartCats supporters and Hero VIP Club members make an extraordinary difference.
Through initiatives like our Care Packages and Purrfect Start Program, iHeartCats helps provide rescue partners with essential supplies to care for cats and kittens in need.
Care Packages help relieve the financial burden of everyday necessities like blankets and toys, while the Purrfect Start Program provides critical supplies for vulnerable newborn kittens, including specialized formula and feeding equipment.
By helping rescue organizations meet these ongoing needs, our supporters allow rescuers to stretch their limited resources further and devote more of their funding to urgent medical cases. Cases just like Lillian Rose’s.
When a rescue doesn’t have to spend as much of its budget on basic supplies, it has more flexibility to pursue lifesaving veterinary treatment for cats who might otherwise go without.
For Lillian Rose, access to specialized care and medication meant the difference between a life of chronic pain and a future filled with comfort, affection, and hope.
And thanks to the dedication of Furry Friends LA, she finally has that chance.
