Casey Christopher does outstanding work photographing shelter animals, particularly, those considered “unadoptable.” We love her work so much, we’ve shared it several times before! Casey told us about this series which focuses on black cats, and we were eager to show you, too!

Based on statics, black cats are considered “less adoptable” than others, so Casey wanted to give them some attention. It’s hard to say why these cats are less desirable than others; it could be old-fashioned superstition, or the fear of dark hair on light clothes and furniture, but we think these cats are gorgeous!

Casey has a talent for photographing more than meets the eye. This series showcases their dark coats as a definite positive quality, drawing attention to the beauty that their black fur gives them. But it also captures their unique personalities, from the serene to the spunky!

Casey explained to iHeartCats what inspired her to get these kitties in front of her camera:

“I first created this photo series two years ago because there were so many black cats at the shelter where I volunteer.”

“It was early October so I thought it’d be fun to do a black cat series for Halloween.”

“I researched more about black cats and learned that they are the least adopted cats in shelters, partly because they don’t photograph well.”

“I wanted to celebrate their beauty so I photographed them against a black backdrop.  It makes them look powerful and confident.”

“I love all cats, but I really love black cats.  I think they’re very sleek and elegant.”

“In my opinion, they tend to have the best personalities as well.”

“It’s very important when photographing adoptable animals to show off their personalities in their photos.  I hope that my photos capture not only their beauty but their distinct personalities as well.”

Casey’s photos helped get many of these cats adopted, and most are cozy in their forever homes!

But there are still countless beautiful black cats waiting in shelters all across the country.

And so many reasons to love that dark fur!
