To call cats lazy isn’t entirely fair. Rather than lazy, felines would prefer to be labeled efficient in their energy use. Every move a cat makes is one best designed to get maximum results. They do nothing without a purpose, including how they go about their tasks.

In a video taken outside her California home, Mary Jane the cat illustrates the feline ability to puzzle out the easiest way possible to achieve a goal. This smart tuxedo lady wanted to get on top of the fence to have a look around her kingdom, but hopping from the backer rail to the pickets seemed a precarious option. So, the clever cat came up with a solution!

From Tiptoes to Top of the Post

Hindustan Times first shared the video of Mary Jane at work, and while the clip is a new one, seeing a cat work out the subtle nuances of using their energy wisely is a theme cat lovers know well. But it’s always nice to see new examples because cats are incredibly bright creatures that keep us entertained with their brilliance and their shenanigans. And Mary Jane’s approach to climbing the fence is just one more purrfect example of why we love cats.

The minute-and-a-half video opens with Mary Jane standing on the top fence backer and peering into the yard next door. Whatever she spied, it had her wanting a better look. But from where she stands, the thin picket tops and the work to hop her backend onto them seem both risky and a lot of work.

So, what does Mary Jane do?

Spying where the fence meets on two sides at a corner post, this intelligent tux holds onto the fence with her front paws and tippy-toes her way along the backer until she reaches the corner. There, she simply hops her fuzzy fanny onto the top of the post and looks around to be sure the whole world has watched her brilliant feat. Mary Jane certainly looks purroud of her work as she poses on top of the pickets!

What Would Your Cat Do?

So, you see, by taking a different route, Mary Jane saved herself the work of jumping and balancing when a little sidestepping and a hop got her where she wanted to go with minimal effort. The next time you want to save some energy in your chores, ask yourself, how would my cat do this? You’ll find yourself napping on the couch in half the time by following a feline-approved method!
