Whether you call them feral cats or community cats, these wild ones face dangers of all sorts on the regular. Illness, injury, and food scarcity often plague feral cats. And sadly, some humans aren’t kind to these wild kitties. But for all the people who don’t care for community cats, others go to great lengths every day to protect and care for them through TNR efforts. By providing food, spay/neuter surgeries, and needed medical treatments, these cat-loving souls help felines with hardships find rescue and a second chance, whether that’s back with their colony or through fostering and adoption.

PBJ is a tabby of the streets who owes his second chance to the cat lovers of Bedford Cares, a Trap-Neuter-Return initiative in Bedford, Virginia. He was found in Altavista, an area roughly an hour from Bedford, with a jar stuck on his head. It had been there for three days, meaning poor PBJ spent that time scared, hungry, thirsty, and unsure of what to do. But Bedford Cares was there to save the day for the good boy.

Getting the PBJ Out of The Jar

When Bedford Cares received word of a cat with a jar stuck on his head in Altavista, Janice Goff Stevens, a trapper with the TNR group, hopped in the car and headed that way. Neighbors had decided they needed the group’s help when they couldn’t catch the cat.

As Bedford Cares reported on Facebook, “This poor kitty in Altavista had a jar stuck on its head for at least three days, and neighbors were unable to catch it so they could remove the jar.”

Being stuck in the jar, “the cat wasn’t able to eat or drink and was in extreme danger.”

But Janice worked her trapping magic and soon had the tabby cat in her care. She took PBJ to the Spay and Neuter Clinic in Evington. There, staff performed the delicate operation of removing the glass jar from PBJ’s head without the glass shattering into a million pieces.

Once free, PBJ enjoyed a neutering surgery and some downtime for healing before heading back to his Altavista turf. Thanks to kind hearts, this tough tabby’s rescue and release prove TNR works magic for cats in need.

“Bedford Cares is super-proud of Janice and the happy ending for PBJ.”

We are too, and we’re also grateful to Bedford Cares for all the care they give community cats!
