This past December, a tiny kitten was found abandoned in a box in San Jose, California. He was hurting, emaciated, and for unknown reasons, dyed blue.

The kitten, who was named Smurf, was taken to the Nine Lives Foundation in Redwood City. They saved him from being euthanized, which was considered due to the extent of his injuries: he only weighed one pound, and had puncture wounds covering his body. It is thought that little Smurf was used as live bait for dogfighting.

Don’t worry, this story gets better! The little blue kitten is now recovering beautifully. And speaking of beautiful, he’s looking less smurf-like every single day. The kitty’s soft, natural grey fur is growing in, making those stunning green eyes stand out even more. See?

Smurf’s purple color is approximately 70% gone! He is becoming a gorgeous grey medium hair fluffy boy! (possibly a tabby! ) – time will tell!

And who’s that black-and-white furball in the background? Smurf’s new best friend, Wanda! She is a blind kitty who found happiness and comfort in the Smurf’s company–and the feeling is mutual.

Good Thursday Morning to everyone! SMURF & WANDA enjoying a quiet moment together – if only you could hear the synchronous purring! #smurfandwanda #cats #adopt #spay

The two sweethearts were in medical foster care and were expected to enter regular foster care in the middle of January, according to an article by Fox KTVU. The story also states that the pair will remain forever friends and will be adopted out together, probably within the next several months.

Until then, Smurf and Wanda are continuing to recover in company and comfort. They’re loving the new life that they’re able to spend together, thanks to the amazing folks at the Nine Lives Foundation!
