Just 30 feet outside of a county animal shelter in San Jacinto, California, more than 50 cats were struggling to survive. The proximity to the shelter was heartbreaking. While help was so close, many of these cats had been abandoned rather than surrendered, left to fend for themselves without consistent food, medical care, or protection.
When cats are left outside, they often form colonies that quickly grow and become difficult to manage. Thankfully, Karlee’s Angels Pet Rescue is determined to help forgotten cats like these, and iHeartCats’ customers are willing to step up and support that mission.
A Mission That Became Much Bigger
What began as a trap, neuter, and release effort quickly revealed a deeper level of need. Over the course of several weeks, the team at Karlee’s Angels worked tirelessly to safely trap each cat, assess their condition, and begin the long process of care. Many of the cats required far more than routine spay and neuter procedures. Rescuers discovered that many of the colony members were suffering from injuries, ear infections, and more.
Instead of simply releasing them, Karlee’s Angels committed to providing full veterinary care. This meant additional time, resources, and funding, as many cats needed to be held until they were healthy enough to move forward.
Finding Homes and Creating Stability
Despite the challenges, there were bright moments of hope. Approximately 20 of the cats were social enough to transition into indoor life and were placed up for adoption.
The remaining cats were spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and returned to their colony with a new level of care and oversight. Today, Karlee’s Angels continues to support them by providing food and fresh water four days a week, while closely monitoring their health.
If new cats appear, they are quickly trapped and fixed. If any cat shows signs of illness, the team steps in again to provide care. This ongoing commitment ensures the colony remains stable and healthy, preventing further population growth and suffering.
