For tiny kittens like Hugo and Philly, survival can come down to a chain of people willing to say, “This little life matters.”
A Good Samaritan who stops to help. A rescue that finds room when there seems to be none. A foster willing to sacrifice sleep for around-the-clock feedings and medications. And compassionate supporters who make sure those rescuers have the food, supplies, and financial support they need to keep saying yes.
For Hugo and Philly, that chain of compassion included you.
Hugo Had Minutes to Live

When newborn Hugo arrived at a local shelter, he was in critical condition. Only a few days old, he was suffering from infected wounds, including an umbilical cord infection that had progressed to sepsis. He desperately needed specialized, round-the-clock care, and fast.
Karlee’s Angels Pet Rescue in San Jacinto, California, stepped in to give him that chance. Foster mom Lisa began working around the clock, providing the intensive care such a fragile neonatal kitten requires.
There were veterinary visits, medications, wound care, endless bottle feedings, sleepless nights, and plenty of uncertainty. At times, the team feared they might lose him.
But Hugo kept fighting. And little by little, the critically ill newborn began to grow stronger.
Today, you would hardly recognize him as the kitten who once had only minutes to live. Hugo is healthy, playful, and bossy, just like a kitten his age should be!
And somewhere along the way, he found a best friend.
Philly Needed Someone to Say “Yes”
Philly’s journey to Karlee’s Angels looked a little different, but his life was every bit as vulnerable.
When the rescue first learned about the tiny kitten, they faced one of the most painful realities of animal rescue: sometimes the need is greater than the available resources.
There was no 24-hour foster available and no safe isolation space for another sick kitten. Karlee’s Angels couldn’t take Philly in, but they didn’t simply turn him away. Instead, the team provided a kitten care kit and instructions so the people caring for him would have supplies and guidance while trying to help him.
A few days later, Philly came back. His eyes were still severely infected, and his weight showed just how much he was struggling. He was at least a week behind in growth for his age. Without professional care, Philly would not survive.
This time, Karlee’s Angels found a way to say yes. After a veterinary visit and plenty of dedicated TLC, Philly began to blossom.
Today, Karlee’s Angels says he is doing beautifully. And perhaps fittingly, the kitten who needed someone to make room for him found his place right beside Hugo. The two are only about a week apart in age and have become inseparable best friends, growing and thriving together.
Your Support Helps Make Every “Yes” Possible
Hugo and Philly’s transformation is the result of an incredible chain of compassion, and iHeartCats supporters are an important link in that chain.
Through initiatives like the Purrfect Start Program and the Golden Whiskers Project, iHeartCats partners with Karlee’s Angels and other rescue organizations to provide funding and much-needed supplies. That can mean nourishing food and kitten care supplies for the youngest, most vulnerable babies, along with blankets, toys, and enrichment items that provide comfort and help growing kittens learn, play, and thrive.
Every item donated also represents something less tangible, but incredibly valuable: breathing room for a rescue’s budget.
When Karlee’s Angels doesn’t have to purchase every bag of food, can of kitten meal replacer, blanket, or other essential themselves, those saved dollars can go toward veterinary care and other urgent needs, or help make it possible to open the door for the next cat or kitten who desperately needs somewhere to go.
That’s why your impact extends far beyond a single donated item. You help rescues have the resources to say yes.
Helping More Kittens Before They Ever Reach a Shelter
Karlee’s Angels is also working to tackle the overwhelming challenges of kitten season from several directions. As unwanted and orphaned kittens flood shelters each year, the rescue promotes low-cost spay/neuter resources and supports responsible Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) efforts to help reduce community cat populations and shelter overcrowding.
They also host foster workshops where community members can learn lifesaving skills like bottle-feeding neonatal kittens, caring for young kittens and mothers with babies, and participating in TNR.
And those emergency kitten care kits (the same type of resource initially provided for Philly) can be placed into the hands of people who unexpectedly find vulnerable kittens. They provide critical supplies and guidance to help bridge the gap until foster or rescue assistance becomes available.
Each effort creates another opportunity to save a life.
