On a morning already heavy with heartbreak, Charlene Jackson and her family had no idea that a tiny miracle was waiting just above their heads. They were spending precious final hours with their beloved 12-year-old dog, Caddie, surrounding her with gentle touches, familiar voices, and all the love they could give before saying goodbye. “It had been raining for a few days before, and it was chilly,” Charlene said. “The sun was finally out, so they must have been on the skylight to get warm.”
The little family appeared to have found one of the warmest spots available after enduring the damp conditions. Seeing the kittens exposed on the roof, Charlene’s daughter, Georgie, immediately knew she wanted to help.
A Rescue That Became More Complicated
The Jacksons carried a kennel, food, and water onto the roof, initially hoping to give the cats a safe place to rest. But their plans changed when they watched one kitten stumble into a drainage opening. Suddenly, leaving the family on the roof no longer seemed safe. The family created a small enclosure on their patio where the kittens could stay protected. Mama was free to come and go, allowing her to care for her babies without feeling trapped. But when Georgie reviewed videos of the cats on the roof, she noticed something alarming. There had been five kittens, yet only four were safely inside the enclosure.
“We had Mama and 4 kittens but realized after watching the videos there were 5 kittens,” Charlene said. “We couldn’t find the 5th one anywhere. We thought it was lost for good.”
The Jacksons searched but couldn’t locate the tiny missing kitten that evening. Already carrying the emotional weight of Caddie’s approaching goodbye, they could only hope the baby had somehow survived. The next morning, the family said a heartbreaking farewell to Caddie. “It felt like the kittens and mama were sent to us to help us heal,” Charlene said.
Then came some desperately needed good news. Less than 24 hours later, the missing kitten was discovered alive after surviving two days alone in a roof gutter. The tiny survivor was finally reunited with Mama and her siblings.
After so much uncertainty, the Jacksons thought the cat family’s ordeal was finally behind them. They were wrong. The following morning, Mama raced toward Charlene and Lulu outside. She appeared distressed and began frantically scratching at the patio door. Charlene initially assumed she wanted food and put out a fresh bowl. Mama ignored it completely.
“I thought it was strange, so I went out to see what she wanted,” Charlene said. “I looked into the pen and found only 2 kitties. 3 had escaped.”

“Every time we stopped or came inside to take a break, Mama scratched at the door,” Charlene said. “She was insisting we find them. She even led us up a pathway several times. It was very deliberate.”
Trusting her instincts, they repeatedly followed Mama along the path. Hours passed without any sign of the missing kittens, but the determined mother continued trying to guide them. On one final attempt, Mama suddenly jumped from the pathway onto a covered pile of wood. She stopped and stared at the Jacksons as if she knew exactly where they needed to look. The family became quiet. Then they heard rustling.
“We were quiet and heard rustling,” Charlene said. “All 3 kitties were together and had fallen down to the bottom of the wood pile and were stuck. They were about 4 feet down.”
The frightened kittens had fallen deep into the pile and couldn’t climb back out. The Jacksons carefully dismantled the wood until they could reach each tiny body and lift the kittens to safety. After returning all three babies to Mama, they reinforced the patio enclosure. This time, there would be no more adventurous escapes. Over the following weeks, the once-frightened kittens began to flourish. Safe beside their attentive mother, they spent their days eating, growing, wrestling, and playing inside the patio pen.

“This family of kitties and mama have really helped us heal,” Charlene said.
