Scrubbles the cat has had some lousy luck in life, but things are finally looking up for him in a major way. After spending 6 1/2 years as a beloved, but seemingly unadoptable resident at the Sequoia Humane Society (SHS) in Eureka, California, Scrubbles finally has a home to call his own – complete with two humans and two canines.

Adopted!!!
WOW what can be said about Scrubbles other than he is the perfect cat-cat! Scrubbles had a precarious start…

When Scrubbles was just a tiny kitten someone stuffed him in a paper bag and tossed him into a dumpster. He arrived at SHS on July 1, 2010 dehydrated, malnourished and emaciated with a severe respiratory infection and an eye infection that cost him his sight in one eye. Although he recovered, he still suffers from chronic congestion due to that initial virus.

Cassie Roney, a lifelong animal lover, remembers hearing about Scrubbles all those years ago when he was first rescued. She assumed that a young kitten like him would have no trouble finding a home, but unfortunately that just was not the case. The days and weeks turned to months and years, still no one showed any interest in adopting the stuffy-nosed cat with the blind eye.

Dear Diary,
This morning, I was playing with my buddy Scrubbles, and he was sitting up on the top shelf by the…

Over time Scrubbles became something of a mascot to the staff at SHS. They taught him to walk on a harness so he could get out of the shelter for daily walks. They showered him with treats, toys and affection, but nothing could take the place of a real, honest to goodness home.

Just when it seemed that the Sequoia Humane Society’s longest resident was going to spend his entire life at the shelter, fate stepped in. Cassie Roney saw a SHS Facebook post about Scrubbles and remembered his story. She decided to go and meet him – and fell in love.

Today was another amazing day at the shelter. Our longest feline resident, Scrubbles was adopted today. Scrubbles was…

Roney and her husband, Nick already share their 10-acre property with two rescue dogs – Taco, a 17-year-old Rat Terrier and Echo, a 4-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback-Boxer mix who suffers from seizures – so it’s a good thing Scrubbles loves dogs.

The cat nobody wanted finally moved in with a real family on February 3, 2017. After nearly 7 years of shelter life, it would be understandable for Scrubbles to have some trouble adjusting, but Cassie says that has not been the case. He made himself right at home, exploring room by room, gazing out the windows, snuggling with Cassie and choosing a “signature spot” (on top of the dining room table).

As for Taco and Echo, they are more than happy to have another special rescue pet in the family. Cassie told Times Standard News:

“Echo is obsessed with Scrubbles. She follows him around like a teenager.”

Kudos to the Sequoia Humane Society for never giving up on Scrubbles, and to the Roneys for taking a chance on a wonderful cat the rest of the world had overlooked.
