Reese had a problem, although no one at Orphans of the Storm Animal Shelter was ever entirely sure what it was. Judging by his face, however, somebody was definitely going to hear about it. Maybe dinner arrived four minutes late. Perhaps someone closed a purse before Reese had completed his inspection, or maybe another person made the unfortunate mistake of suggesting his snaggle tooth wasn’t sufficiently intimidating.

Whatever the offense, Reese looked prepared to escalate the matter immediately. The shelter introduced the adoptable cat as a tiny man who had been “inconvenienced for the LAST TIME,” and his wonderfully disgruntled face made the description hard to dispute.

There was just one problem with Reese’s intimidating persona. Underneath that snaggle tooth and perpetually offended expression was an incredibly sweet cat who loved people almost as much as he loved going through their stuff. And now Reese has found someone willing to accept his terms. The little shelter cat has officially been adopted, giving him an entirely new household to investigate.

Reese Would Like to Speak to the Manager

Orphans of the Storm knew Reese’s face deserved an introduction worthy of it. Instead of pretending their resident curmudgeon looked delighted to meet everyone, they leaned directly into the expression that made him so memorable.

“Reese would like to speak to the manager,” the shelter announced. What he wanted to discuss with management remained unclear, although several possible grievances were offered.

His snaggle tooth certainly helped sell the performance. The shelter assured concerned followers that Reese was healthy and the tooth was supposed to look like that, but it had the added benefit of making every facial expression considerably funnier. The expression was also deeply misleading. Reese wasn’t actually an angry little man preparing a formal complaint because his caregivers described him as sweet, affectionate, and completely devoted to getting attention from his people.

Your Purse Is Now Reese’s Business

Reese’s interest in humans apparently extends to everything those humans happen to own. Bags, purses, pockets, and anything that crinkles are all subject to inspection. Leave a purse accessible, and Reese wants inside. Present him with a suspicious coat pocket or crinkly bag, and the shelter joked that he might as well be arriving with a search warrant.

It is the kind of nosiness cat people know can turn an ordinary household task into an investigation. Reese simply seems to have taken the job more seriously than most, and judging by his expression, failure to cooperate may be noted in his official report.

When he isn’t conducting unauthorized searches, Reese enjoys eating, playing, lounging around, and spending time with his favorite humans. In other words, underneath the face of a deeply inconvenienced middle manager is a pretty classic affectionate cat.

Somebody Saw Reese and Said, ‘I Want That One’

Eventually, the shelter’s campaign to find Reese a family worked. Orphans of the Storm recently returned with what it promised would be an “epic adoption update,” announcing that Reese had officially left the building.

The shelter couldn’t help but marvel at the decision. Someone had looked at the snaggle-toothed cat who appeared perpetually offended, needed access to every purse and pocket, and seemed moments away from contacting legal counsel, and decided that was exactly the cat they wanted.

“Respect,” the shelter joked as it announced his adoption. Reese’s caregivers knew what his new family had discovered, too, because underneath all that apparent indignation was the ridiculously sweet and affectionate cat they had fallen in love with themselves.

Now Reese has a home, a family, and an entirely new collection of personal belongings that presumably require immediate inspection. His shelter couldn’t resist pointing out that he also has “an entirely new group of people to inconvenience.”

Reese Unfortunately Has His Own Instagram Now

Apparently, Reese’s new family quickly understood that this particular cat required a public platform. They’ve already created an Instagram account for their newly adopted troublemaker, appropriately named @reeseunfortunately.

The name suggests Reese’s family knows exactly what they’ve signed up for, which seems like an excellent start. His days at the shelter may be over, but his career in purse inspection, pocket investigation, snaggle-toothed judgment, and general nosiness is only entering a new phase.

For Orphans of the Storm, that’s exactly the ending they wanted for the little cat whose face suggested nothing had ever gone according to plan. Reese finally has people of his own, and those people apparently love him enough to give the rest of us a front-row seat to whatever he decides to complain about next.

Go forth, Reese. There are bags to search, people to inconvenience, and presumably at least one manager who has been expecting your call.
