Some cats wear their emotions right on their faces. Thomas appears to have chosen one emotion and committed to it permanently: deeply unimpressed. The senior Persian has the kind of expression that suggests someone has just interrupted his nap, served dinner three minutes late, or committed some other unforgivable offense against feline dignity. The tiny tip of his tongue frequently peeks from his mouth, only making the look better. Yet behind Thomas’s wonderfully judgmental face is an extraordinarily sweet cat who has survived being struck by a car, undergone surgery for a growth in his mouth, and is now living with liver cancer.
Through all of it, Thomas has remained gentle, affectionate, and remarkably content. Life has thrown an astonishing amount at this fluffy senior, but judging by his expression, Thomas may simply be unimpressed by life’s attempts to rattle him.
Thomas arrived in the care of AMA Animal Rescue in Brooklyn, New York, after being hit by a car. He was injured and desperately needed medical attention, beginning what would become a long road back to health.
His foster caregivers surrounded him with the patience and attention he needed. They tended his wounds, kept him comfortable, and gave the frightened senior somewhere safe to recover. Slowly, Thomas began healing from an ordeal he was fortunate to have survived. Then his veterinary team discovered another problem.
Thomas Survived One Challenge Only to Face Another
While Thomas was recovering from the accident, veterinarians discovered a growth inside his mouth that needed to be removed surgically. It was another frightening hurdle for a cat already recovering from significant trauma, but once again, Thomas had people determined to see him through it.
His fosters remained beside him through the procedure and recovery, carefully tending to him while his body healed. Thomas pulled through the surgery successfully, and the growth was removed. Eventually, the senior cat who had arrived injured after being struck by a car made a full recovery from both of those frightening chapters.
His personality had survived completely intact, too. Thomas emerged as an exceptionally gentle Persian who preferred the quieter pleasures in life. Give him somewhere soft to sleep, someone loving nearby, and enough time to contemplate whatever poor decisions the humans around him were making, and he was perfectly content. Unfortunately, his medical story was not quite finished.
A Cancer Diagnosis Changed the Plan, Not Thomas
More recently, Thomas was diagnosed with liver cancer. There is no cure for his condition, meaning the focus of his care has shifted toward protecting his quality of life and keeping him comfortable for as long as possible.
The encouraging news is that Thomas currently seems to have very different opinions about how sick he is supposed to act. He shows no outward signs of illness and continues enjoying an excellent quality of life, according to his rescue. His daily medical needs are currently limited to a liver supplement, while his caregivers and veterinarian carefully monitor him and make sure his comfort remains the priority
Thomas, meanwhile, remains busy with the important work of being Thomas. He lounges. He naps. He accepts affection. He positions himself near his favorite people and generally behaves like a comfortable senior cat who has delegated worrying about medical charts to the humans. Considering everything he has survived, he has earned the right.
That Face Has Opinions About Everything
Then there is the expression that makes Thomas impossible to forget. His fluffy Persian features already give him an adorably serious appearance, but add the tiny tongue that frequently peeks from his mouth and Thomas becomes a master of accidental comedy. His rescue says he often appears either slightly confused or as though someone nearby has done something embarrassing enough to warrant his silent judgment.
It is an especially funny contrast because Thomas’s actual personality is nothing like his stern little face suggests. He is calm, affectionate, and happiest simply lounging beside someone he trusts. His soft fur and gentle temperament make him an ideal companion for someone who appreciates the quieter side of feline friendship.
Thomas does not need constant entertainment or a household filled with excitement. His perfect world involves a soft bed, a warm lap, a peaceful room, and preferably no foolishness requiring one of his legendary looks of disapproval. After everything life has thrown at him, peace is exactly what he deserves.
Thomas Is Ready for His Happiest Chapter Yet
Despite his cancer diagnosis, Thomas is feeling well enough that AMA Animal Rescue hopes to find him a loving home of his own. He is neutered, fully vetted, and looking for an adopter who understands that his golden years should be comfortable, quiet, and filled with affection.
There is something particularly touching about what Thomas asks for after everything he has endured. He does not need grand adventures or endless excitement. He seems perfectly happy with sunny resting places, gentle affection, comfortable naps, and the reassuring presence of someone nearby.
Thomas has already survived being hit by a car and recovered from surgery. Now, even while living with cancer, he continues enjoying his days with the same sweetness that has carried him through every difficult chapter. His face, of course, tells an entirely different story.
Thomas may be comfortable, adored, and surrounded by people determined to make every day count, but one glance at that tiny tongue and magnificently unimpressed Persian expression suggests he would prefer everyone keep their enthusiasm under control. After everything he has survived, Thomas has earned the right to judge the rest of us.
