Pinecone belongs to Kayleigh Smith, an art teacher who noticed early on that her cat had an unusual gift for connecting with people. While many cats prefer familiar surroundings and become nervous around strangers, Pinecone seemed completely comfortable meeting new faces.
He was naturally curious, remarkably patient, and happy to receive attention from just about anyone. His relaxed personality made Kayleigh wonder whether he could offer comfort to people beyond their home.
Kayleigh’s school already had experience welcoming a therapy dog, so the idea of bringing in a therapy cat did not seem entirely impossible. Still, a school filled with students, conversations, and constant activity would be a very different environment for a feline.
Fortunately, Pinecone’s calm temperament made him a promising candidate. After becoming a certified therapy cat, he was ready to begin an unusual new chapter in his life.
A Little Yellow Vest and a Very Important Job
About twice a week, Pinecone accompanies Kayleigh to school wearing his signature yellow vest. Instead of spending the morning lounging at home, he gets to explore a place filled with friendly faces and plenty of opportunities for affection.
The art room serves as his home base, but Pinecone’s visits are not limited to one classroom. He also makes his way through the hallways, greeting students and enjoying the attention that comes with being the school’s resident therapy cat.

One of his most charming features is his permanently serious expression. Even when he is perfectly relaxed, Pinecone looks as though he is carefully evaluating everything happening around him.
That serious little face makes his school visits especially amusing. He might look like an important administrator checking that everyone is following the rules, but his real responsibility is simply to help people feel better.
For students dealing with stress or feeling overwhelmed, Pinecone offers a welcome moment of calm. They can spend time gently petting him, sitting quietly beside him, or simply enjoying his peaceful presence.
Sometimes, a comforting interaction with an animal can make a difficult school day feel a little easier. Pinecone does not need to perform tricks or do anything extraordinary to make a difference. His patient nature and willingness to spend time with students are what make his visits special.
There is something particularly heartwarming about the arrangement. Students receive a gentle companion who offers a break from their busy routines, while Pinecone gets to enjoy the attention he seems to love.
Kayleigh also gets the unusual pleasure of bringing her beloved pet to work. What began as a simple observation about her cat’s friendly personality has grown into a meaningful experience for the school community.
Pinecone’s story is a lovely reminder that therapy animals come in different shapes, sizes, and personalities. While dogs are often the first animals people imagine in this role, a patient and affectionate cat can also bring comfort to those around him.

And although Pinecone may never lose his adorably stern expression, his gentle personality tells a completely different story. Beneath that serious face is a friendly feline whose twice-weekly visits have made him a cherished part of school life.
Most cats spend their weekdays enjoying the quiet comforts of home. Pinecone, however, has found a place where his natural kindness can brighten someone else’s day, one gentle interaction at a time.
