A cat hissing, swatting, or desperately trying to wriggle free might earn laughs online, especially when the moment is presented as harmless play. Yet what looks funny or adorable through a screen may tell a very different story from the cat’s perspective. New research suggests that social media viewers frequently overlook or dismiss visible signs that cats want an interaction to stop. Instead of recognizing those behaviors as warnings of discomfort or stress, many people interpret them as entertainment, affection, or simply part of a cat’s personality.
The findings come from a study published in Anthrozoös by researchers from Adelaide University in Australia. Their work raises questions about how easily social media can shape perceptions of normal and acceptable interactions between people and their pets.
Previous research has shown that human interactions can play an important role in feline well-being. Positive experiences can strengthen the relationship between cats and their guardians, but unwanted attention can have the opposite effect. The researchers noted that play is often encouraged as a valuable source of enrichment and bonding. However, successful play also depends on people recognizing when a cat is comfortable and when the animal is signaling that it has had enough.
When Cat Play Stops Being Play
Veterinary scientist Julia Henning and her colleagues examined 11 videos from YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. The creators had presented the interactions as play, yet the cats displayed visible signs of distress, including hissing and attempts to escape.
The team then analyzed 1,100 comments posted beneath those videos. Despite the cats’ behavior, between 75 and 93 percent of the comments across the videos expressed positive attitudes toward the interactions.
That reaction concerned the researchers because a cat’s early signals of discomfort can be relatively subtle. If those warnings are repeatedly ignored, the animal may experience acute stress, which could become a longer-term welfare concern when unwanted interactions continue. The researchers found that viewers frequently minimized these signals instead of treating them as meaningful communication. In some cases, behaviors indicating that a cat wanted space were interpreted as amusing or affectionate.
Nine recurring themes emerged from the comments. One reflected the belief that if a cat truly disliked an interaction, the animal would simply leave or react more dramatically. Other viewers misunderstood distress signals entirely or assumed that cats understood the human was only playing. Some believed continued interaction would eventually win the cat over, while others romanticized resistance as a peculiar expression of feline affection.
Cuteness also appeared to influence how viewers interpreted what they were seeing. When a cat looked adorable, its attempts to protest or escape could become secondary to the entertainment value of the video. Some commenters treated the cats’ reactions as funny, while people who questioned the interactions were sometimes dismissed as overly critical or inexperienced with cats.
These responses illustrate how easily an animal’s boundaries can become obscured when a short video is framed as entertainment. A playful caption, laughter from the person filming, or a stream of approving comments may influence how later viewers interpret the same behavior.
Social media itself may reinforce the problem. The researchers noted that platforms can reward content for generating engagement, even when the interaction shown may be problematic. Repeated exposure to videos portraying distressed behavior as funny or harmless could also influence perceptions of what normal cat play looks like. When thousands of people respond positively, viewers may become more likely to accept similar interactions with their own pets.
There is a human safety concern as well. Seven of the 11 videos showed an observable injury to a person. Although the injuries appeared relatively minor and were often minimized by commenters, cat bites and scratches can carry a risk of infection.
The findings highlight why understanding feline communication involves more than knowing a list of body language signals. People also need to respect those signals when a cat communicates discomfort or asks for space. A hiss, an escape attempt, or another defensive response should not have to become dramatic before it is taken seriously. Recognizing earlier signs can allow an interaction to end before a cat feels forced to escalate its response.
The researchers suggest that education should therefore go beyond simply teaching people how to identify cat body language. Addressing assumptions about feline behavior and encouraging greater media literacy may also be necessary to change how people respond to these videos.
Ultimately, the study offers a useful reminder that a viral moment does not always show the entire emotional picture. Cats cannot explain their discomfort in words, so their movements, expressions, and attempts to disengage become their voice.
Learning to notice and respect that communication can make everyday interactions safer and more comfortable for both cats and people. Sometimes the kindest response to a cat is not another playful touch, but recognizing when the animal is asking to be left alone.
