Who says cats can’t steal the spotlight in the world of sports? A charming one-year-old British Shorthair named Billy has captured the attention of fans around the globe after building an astonishing record of predicting tournament winners with remarkable accuracy. What began as a lighthearted game between Billy and his parents quickly turned into an online sensation as the clever rescue cat continued making the correct choice for every match that did not end in a draw, leaving thousands eager to see whether his incredible streak would continue.
Billy’s impressive run has delighted owners Linka Lin, 33, and Mark Kelly, 35, who began sharing his predictions online simply as a fun way to showcase his playful personality. Since the tournament began in the United States, Billy has been presented with two miniature national flags before each match. Using nothing more than a gentle tap of his paw, he chooses the team he believes will win.
So far, his record has been flawless. His latest successful prediction came when he correctly picked Argentina to defeat Austria, adding another accurate result to his growing list.
Linka, from Newry, County Down, Ireland, says Billy has taken his unexpected fame completely in stride.
“As a cat he doesn’t seem to be bothered that he’s an online influencer,” she said.
“To us he’s still our cat, still Billy.”
She believes many people simply enjoy the lighthearted fun Billy brings to the tournament.
“People have different interpretations of the videos online, but we’re very happy to give such a feeling and boost of confidence for people and a feeling of safety and comfort to see some of the results ahead of time.”
Although Billy’s perfect streak has raised expectations, Linka remains optimistic.
“Of course, it’s going to be harder and harder to get it right with time and the level of expectation will be heavier, but I’m pretty confident he can handle that.”
She joked that Billy has probably noticed one major benefit of his newfound fame.
“I guess he probably will find it surprising he has had more treats lately than ever.”
A Clever Cat With A Big Personality
Billy’s story began long before he became known for predicting sports results. Linka adopted him from the animal charity USPCA when he was just three months old. His distinctive heart-shaped marking on his nose quickly earned him the affectionate nickname Billy Heartnose.
From the beginning, Billy showed he was anything but an ordinary cat.
“I guess we realized he’s very vocal about communicating what he needs,” Linka explained.
“He communicates with different body language and meows to let us know if he wants something.”
Whether he wants a snack, some outdoor time, or simply attention, Billy has developed his own unique ways of making his wishes known. He will even walk Linka to the door when he wants to head outside or hopes a treat might be coming his way.
Recognizing how intelligent and expressive he was, Linka and Mark began thinking of creative ways to feature his personality on social media.
“We know Billy is very, very smart and we were thinking, ‘How can we capture his personality and smartness?'”
Their first videos involved simple “this or that” games, asking Billy to choose between everyday favorites like Pepsi or Coke, or rice or noodles. The playful challenges quickly showed how naturally Billy engaged with the activity.
Everything changed when Linka returned home from an event carrying several small national flags.
“I was trying to play with him and the different flags,” she said.
“It just so happened the tournament had started, so we thought, ‘Why not?'”
Neither of them expected the videos to spread so quickly across social media, but viewers were immediately drawn to Billy’s calm confidence and surprisingly accurate predictions.
Not every decision happens instantly. Sometimes, Billy studies the flags before carefully making his choice, almost as if he is weighing every option. Other times, however, the decision is immediate.
“There was one incident where the whole thing was interrupted as there was a fly in the house and he couldn’t concentrate,” Linka laughed.
The humorous moment only made fans love him even more.
Most of the reactions online have been overwhelmingly positive, with people eagerly waiting to see Billy’s next prediction before each match.
“It’s very positive and encouraging reactions online and we’ve had a lot of really kind messages,” Linka said.
Even when Billy picks against someone’s favorite team, his charm usually wins people over.
“Sometimes Billy will pick a country people don’t want and they will comment saying, ‘I forgive you, you’re really cute.'”
While a few comments have jokingly warned Billy not to be right, Linka says the overwhelming response has been one of kindness, laughter, and appreciation. For many viewers, Billy’s playful predictions have become an enjoyable tradition that adds an extra layer of excitement to every match, proving that one smart rescue cat can bring smiles to fans around the world.
