This year marks Boonton, New Jersey’s seventh annual art celebration, Dog Days of Summer & Some Cool Cats. The cute and colorful presentation showcases local artists and features sculptural representations of our favorite furry friends.

While some of the proceeds benefit local schools and future arts projects, the majority goes to nearby NorthStar Pet Rescue.

So far, more than $80,000 has been raised for local animal shelters and more than $6,000 for local schools.

The larger art installations can be found up and down the streets of Boonton, while the smaller sculptures (many of which were painted by school kids) adorn shop windows.

There are 150 sculptures in all. Some are splashed in bright color and impossible to miss, while others, like “Bark Dog” by Paul Rosenberger, blend in with the scenery.

Here’s how the annual event works: Each spring the Boonton Arts Council hosts a party to acquire sponsors. Once sponsored, the artists receive life-sized fiberglass dog (or cat) sculptures to customize as they please.

The sculptures are on display from June through September, attracting visitors from across the state. Each summer dog and cool cat is available for purchase through an online store until the end of September.

Any fiberglass pets that remain unsold are then auctioned off at a closing party in October.
