Trout had spent longer at the animal shelter than any other resident, and staff believed she was the least likely cat to be adopted. But when a woman named Abby and her family came to meet her, Trout greeted them with so much affection that leaving without her quickly became unthinkable. The cat who had waited the longest was finally about to have a home of her own.
Abby hadn’t expected their adoption appointment to become such an easy decision. Between learning how long Trout had been waiting and experiencing her affectionate personality firsthand, the family knew they wanted her. What happened after they brought Trout home made their decision feel even more special.

The Shelter Cat Who Was Considered Unlikely To Be Adopted
During their visit, Abby and her family learned that Trout was the shelter’s longest resident. Staff also told them that she was considered the least likely to find an adopter, although Abby did not explain exactly why the shelter had given her that assessment.
Whatever had kept Trout waiting, her behavior during the appointment left a lasting impression. Rather than keeping her distance from the visitors, she immediately showered them with affection, giving Abby and her family a chance to see the loving companion she could be.
For Abby, the combination of Trout’s long wait and her affectionate greeting made the choice surprisingly simple. They decided to adopt her, giving the longtime shelter resident the permanent family she had been waiting for.
Trout Makes Herself At Home Almost Immediately
Some adopted cats need time and quiet space before they feel comfortable in unfamiliar surroundings. Trout, however, settled into her new home so quickly that Abby barely noticed an adjustment period.
She began approaching her family and lying on their laps, seemingly delighted to have people nearby. At night, she would sleep with them, choosing their company even when nobody was asking her to cuddle.
Abby believes Trout somehow understood that she had finally arrived home. While nobody can know exactly what a cat is thinking, Trout’s eagerness to seek affection made it clear that she was becoming comfortable with her new family.

A Past Injury Reveals Another Part Of Trout’s Story
As Abby got to know Trout, she also learned more about a physical injury the cat had been living with. Trout’s tail had been severely broken near its base, leaving her unable to hold it upright normally.
Seeing the injury was difficult for Abby, who couldn’t help thinking about how painful it might have been when it happened. According to Abby, veterinarians suspected Trout had experienced some kind of trauma when she was younger and living as a stray, but had not received the treatment needed for the injury to heal properly.
As a result, Trout’s tail now permanently flops onto her back. She doesn’t like having the area touched, and Abby recalled that Trout meowed and appeared uncomfortable when a veterinarian attempted to examine it.
Fortunately, Abby said Trout doesn’t appear to experience pain from the injury during ordinary daily activities. Her family remains mindful of the sensitive area and understands that she may not welcome being touched there.
A Talkative Cat Who Never Runs Out Of Affection
Beyond her cuddly personality, Trout has another habit that makes Abby smile. She loves to meow at her family, often responding whenever someone speaks to her as though she’s participating in the conversation.
Sometimes Abby asks Trout a question or makes a little comment, and the cat answers with a perfectly timed meow. Abby jokingly describes these exchanges as Trout speaking fluent cat, and she finds their little conversations especially sweet.
Trout also enjoys climbing onto Abby, stretching, yawning, and settling in for affection without being invited. Abby believes the warmth and closeness of being with people are especially comforting to her, and she wants Trout to know she can always approach her safely.

For a cat who once seemed unlikely to leave the shelter, life now includes warm laps, nighttime companionship, and a family happy to listen to every little meow. Abby has made a promise to Trout that she intends to keep for the rest of the cat’s life.
She wants Trout to know that she will never have to return to a shelter and that her family will always take care of her. After being the shelter’s longest resident, Trout finally has people who are determined to make her home permanent. And they’ve made her an internet star! Keep up with Trout on Instagram!
