A fluffy cat named Masha is cared for by all the residents of the building she hangs out near. She’s well-fed, gets lots of love, and even has boxes in which she loves to sit. But one day, she came across a box that was already occupied by another creature: a human baby! Instead of competing with the child for the box, Masha protected the infant and found help.

Because of Masha’s nurturing attitude, the baby’s life was saved. Masha is now a hero, and officials are trying to find the abandoned infant’s family.

Residents Hear Unusual Noises

Irina Lavrova, a resident of Obninsk, Russia, heard a crying sound near the building where she lives. At first, she thought it sounded like a cat getting attacked because there were also meowing sounds. When she walked down the stairs, she was relieved to see no cats being harmed. But in the cold entryway, she saw a box with Masha inside.

When Lavrova got closer, she saw that Masha was curled up with a 2.5-month-old baby. The baby was crying while Masha meowed. Masha’s fur kept the baby warm, likely saving his life.

“She is very placid and friendly, so when I heard her meowing, I thought that perhaps she had injured herself,” said Lavrova. “Normally, she would have come and said hello to me. You can imagine my shock when I saw her lying in a box next to a baby.”

The baby wore an adorable green and pink outfit, and whoever left him behind also left diapers and baby food. Even though the baby seemed in good shape, the residents called an ambulance to get the infant to safety.

Masha Saves the Baby’s Life

When the ambulance came to take the baby to a local hospital, Masha grew worried. Paramedic Vera Ivanina said that as the ambulance drove away, Masha followed behind for as long as she could. Her motherly instincts must’ve kicked in, causing her to want to protect the child.

“Everyone in the block is very proud of her,” Lavrova said. “We have all spoiled her rotten by giving her her favorite food.”

Luckily, the hospital staff confirmed that the baby was healthy. He had no signs of abuse or neglect, but he might have frozen to death if Masha hadn’t cuddled with him. The baby is staying at the hospital until police can locate his parents.
