What began as an ordinary day around heavy machinery quickly became a rescue mission no one at River Reach Construction expected. At a worksite in Barberton, Ohio, the crew discovered that the desperate cries coming from one of their excavators belonged to a tiny kitten trapped near the bottom of the machine. Instead of continuing with their usual work, operating supervisor Chase Guello and his coworkers focused on the frightened little animal. Within minutes, their construction site had become the setting for a rescue that would eventually capture millions of hearts online.

River Reach Construction shared footage of the July rescue on social media, showing Guello working to free the kitten from the excavator. Her persistent meows could be heard as the crew carefully figured out how to reach her without causing further distress. Guello joked that their rescue missions normally involved equipment, not tiny animals. This time, however, the most important thing on the jobsite was getting one very small kitten to safety.
A Tiny Rescue With a Big Future
Once the kitten was finally freed, the crew faced another question. They searched for her mother and other cats in the area but were unable to find them. With no mother returning to care for her, the young kitten needed a safe place where she could receive food, attention, and the care required to grow stronger.
The crew named her Sue, a playful reference to Komatsu, the brand of excavator where she had been discovered. The name quickly stuck, giving the little survivor an identity that connected her unusual beginning with the people who had stepped in to help her.

On July 15, Guello shared that the crew had arranged care through a contact at One of a Kind Pet Rescue. Sue was placed with an experienced kitten foster family, giving her time away from the busy construction environment to recover, grow, and receive the close attention a kitten her age needed.
The difference soon became clear. A July 16 update showed that Sue was healthy, eating well, and becoming increasingly playful. The frightened kitten whose cries had first alerted workers to her presence was beginning to settle into a much happier chapter.
Sue’s story also caught the attention of people far beyond the construction crew. Millions watched her rescue online, and her growing fanbase followed along as updates showed her progress. Even Komatsu joined in on the fun. The company sent Sue a package containing a miniature safety vest and a tiny hard hat. She modeled her kitten-sized construction gear in a post, creating a fitting look for a cat whose life had become unexpectedly connected to heavy equipment.
Sue’s future is now looking very different from the uncertain situation in which she was found. River Reach Construction shop mechanic Jared and his family plan to care for her, bringing her between home and the workplace as she gets older.

Eventually, Sue is expected to take on a permanent role as the company’s beloved shop cat. Instead of being remembered only as the kitten trapped inside an excavator, she will be surrounded by the same people who stopped what they were doing to make sure she had a chance.
For the River Reach Construction crew, one unexpected sound from a piece of equipment turned an ordinary workday into something unforgettable. For Sue, those few persistent meows helped lead her from a frightening hiding place to foster care, a loving family, and a workplace already waiting to welcome its smallest new member.
