When rescuers welcomed Mama Butter Braid into foster care, they already knew there might be more surprises on the way. She had arrived after giving birth to one newborn who sadly didn’t survive, and rescuers suspected she might still be pregnant. They were right. After a few days of settling into her foster home, Mama Butter Braid gave birth to four more kittens, creating one very sweet little family with names inspired by an equally sweet fundraiser.
There was Caramel Roll, Blueberry Cream Cheese, Strawberry Cream Cheese, and Bavarian Creme with Chocolate. Mama was doing well, eating plenty, demanding human attention, and caring for her newborns, but one of her babies would soon need a very different kind of care. Bavarian Creme had been born with a severe cleft palate. It meant something as simple and instinctive as nursing beside his siblings could put the tiny kitten at risk, and his path through kittenhood was going to look very different from theirs.
Bavarian Creme Couldn’t Stay at Mama’s ‘Open Milk Bar’
The Bitty Kitty Brigade, which cared for the family in St. Paul, Minnesota, soon had to separate Bavarian Creme from Mama Butter Braid. His cleft palate meant his feeding needed to be carefully managed to keep him safe and make sure he received enough nutrition.
As the rescue explained at the time, Mama’s “open milk bar” could cause problems for a kitten with a cleft palate. Bavarian Creme could struggle to get enough to eat, and the opening in the roof of his mouth meant he couldn’t safely nurse like the rest of the litter.
That didn’t mean the little guy had to grow up completely alone. His new foster home included another kitten friend and even a stuffed elephant companion, giving him some company while his caregivers took over the important job of feeding him.
Bavarian Creme couldn’t simply latch onto a bottle whenever he was hungry. He needed to be tube-fed so he could receive the nutrition required to keep growing while avoiding the risks created by his cleft palate.
Why a Cleft Palate Can Be So Serious for a Kitten
A cleft palate is a congenital condition, meaning a kitten is born with it. The tissues that normally form the roof of the mouth don’t completely join during development, leaving an abnormal opening between the mouth and nasal cavity.
The problem can become apparent almost immediately when a newborn tries to nurse. Depending on the location and severity of the opening, kittens can have difficulty suckling or swallowing, and milk may even come through the nose.
More seriously, food or liquid can enter the respiratory tract instead of traveling normally through the digestive system. This can put affected kittens at risk for aspiration pneumonia, which is one reason specialized feeding and close veterinary care can be so important.
Surgical repair may eventually allow some kittens with cleft palates to eat more normally, but very young kittens first need time to grow. For Bavarian Creme, there was no quick fix because the tiny patient had to become big and strong enough to undergo the complex surgery he needed.
Every Meal Helped Him Get Closer to Surgery
For weeks, Bavarian Creme’s caregivers carefully provided the nutrition he couldn’t safely get on his own. As he grew, he was fed through an esophagostomy tube, allowing his caregivers to support him while he worked toward an important milestone.
He needed to become strong enough for surgery on his cleft palate. Every feeding and every bit of growth brought him a little closer to the procedure his caregivers hoped would give him greater independence.
It was an intensive level of care for one very small patient. Bavarian Creme kept growing, however, and eventually the kitten who had depended on a tube for his meals was ready to take the next major step.
Orphan Kitten Club also became part of his story. Through one of the organization’s medical grants, the group was able to help with the cost of his extensive medical care and cleft palate repair.
Bavarian Creme Takes a Huge Step Forward
Bavarian Creme eventually underwent surgery for his cleft palate. Orphan Kitten Club shared close-up images of his palate following the repair, giving supporters a remarkable look at just how far the little kitten had come.
The procedure was an important part of his treatment, but it wasn’t the end of Bavarian Creme’s medical journey. He will still need another surgery, so his caregivers aren’t quite finished helping this determined kitten through the condition he was born with.
Even with another procedure ahead, Bavarian Creme has already reached an enormous milestone. The kitten who once couldn’t safely nurse with his mother can now eat all on his own.
That seemingly ordinary accomplishment represents weeks of specialized feeding, careful monitoring, growth, veterinary care, and surgery. For Bavarian Creme, being able to handle his own meals is anything but ordinary.
Now He Can Eat All by Himself
Today, Bavarian Creme is described as a strong, healthy kitten who can eat independently. He plays, grows, and thrives like other kittens, even as his medical journey continues.
“It’s almost as if he had never faced such a difficult start,” Orphan Kitten Club shared. Watching him play and grow now makes it easy to forget that something as basic as eating once required extensive help from the people caring for him.
There is something particularly satisfying about seeing Bavarian Creme eat on his own. For his littermates, eating was simply part of growing up, but for their brother, it took weeks of tube feeding and dedicated medical care to reach the same milestone.
His progress also highlights the work happening behind the scenes when rescues take in medically fragile kittens. Some need far more than food, warmth, and a safe foster home before they’re able to grow into stronger, more independent cats.
Bavarian Creme’s Journey Isn’t Over Yet
Bavarian Creme’s story began as part of a litter with names almost too adorable to handle. Caramel Roll, Blueberry Cream Cheese, Strawberry Cream Cheese, and Bavarian Creme with Chocolate should have had nothing more serious to worry about than growing up under Mama Butter Braid’s watchful eye.
Instead, one tiny member of the family needed an entirely different path. Leaving Mama’s milk bar was only the beginning of the specialized care designed to keep Bavarian Creme safe and give him the opportunity to grow.
Orphan Kitten Club says Bavarian Creme is one of many kittens with serious medical needs receiving opportunities to survive, heal, and thrive through the support of its community. His medical grant has helped make extensive treatment possible, and he’ll continue receiving the care he needs as he moves toward another surgery.
For now, there is still plenty worth celebrating. Bavarian Creme with Chocolate may have started life unable to safely eat like his siblings, but today he’s eating, playing, growing, and getting stronger for whatever comes next.
His story isn’t finished, and that’s exactly what makes this milestone so meaningful. This little dessert-themed kitten has already come an incredibly long way, with a dedicated team making sure he gets every chance to keep going.
