On June 24, Venezuela was rocked by two powerful earthquakes that struck in quick succession. The rare seismic event caused widespread destruction across affected areas, leaving thousands of people dead and many more injured. Weeks later, rescue teams continued combing through collapsed buildings, though hopes of finding additional survivors had grown increasingly slim.
Among those volunteering to help was Andres Carvajal, a student at the Central University of Venezuela. Alongside fellow students, he joined rescue efforts to search damaged structures for anyone or anything that might still be alive beneath the debris. While searching a heavily damaged building, his team spotted a small cat hiding deep inside the wreckage. The frightened animal immediately retreated farther into the collapsed structure, making the rescue even more challenging.
Instead of forcing the cat out, Carvajal relied on patience. He carefully removed one of his gloves, placed cat food on his arm, and quietly waited. Little by little, hunger overcame fear, and the dusty feline slowly approached its rescuer.
“He gradually came closer and, of course, ate with a bit of desperation,” Carvajal recalled while describing the emotional moment.
A Small Rescue That Lifted Spirits
When the cat was finally brought to safety, rescuers saw just how much it had endured. Its eyes were coated with dust and debris after spending an unknown amount of time trapped beneath the collapsed building. The exhausted animal was immediately given water and examined by veterinary professionals before receiving additional medical care.
No one knows exactly when the cat became trapped after the earthquakes, but surviving for weeks under such harsh conditions amazed both rescuers and onlookers. The rescue offered a reminder of the remarkable resilience that animals often show during disasters.
For emergency crews, the successful rescue carried meaning beyond saving a single life. By that stage of the recovery operation, teams were primarily recovering victims rather than finding survivors. Bringing one frightened cat safely out of the rubble gave everyone involved a much-needed emotional boost.
Carvajal later shared that the rescue touched him deeply because he has a cat of his own. He said it was impossible not to feel compassion for every life affected by the disaster, no matter how small.
Finding the little cat, he explained, became a genuine ray of hope during an incredibly difficult time. Adding a personal touch to the story, Carvajal’s rescue helmet carried the words “el gato,” which means “the cat” in Spanish. It has been his nickname since primary school, making the successful feline rescue feel especially meaningful.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the June 24 disaster was a rare severe seismic doublet sequence, meaning two earthquakes of similar strength struck in close succession. As of July 19, the disaster had claimed 5,208 lives and left 16,740 people injured.
The rescued cat was not the only animal pulled from the devastation. Just days after the earthquakes, firefighters also saved a terrified puppy trapped beneath piles of concrete and debris. Video from the rescue showed emergency crews carefully lifting the frightened dog to safety before giving it water as it began to recover.
Stories like these cannot erase the immense heartbreak caused by the earthquakes. They do, however, remind rescuers and grieving families that compassion remains strong even during the darkest moments.
