Sometimes, the animals that enter our lives when everything feels uncertain become the ones who give us the strength to keep going. For Nikki, that animal was Wallace, a special cat born with a heart far larger than it should have been. When she adopted him, she already knew their future might be painfully short. A veterinarian had given Wallace a devastating prognosis, estimating that he had only about six months to live. Instead of allowing that prediction to define their time together, Nikki decided Wallace would experience as much happiness, comfort, and love as she could possibly give him.
She filled his days with the simple pleasures he enjoyed most. There were plenty of treats, affection, and quiet moments together, along with stroller rides that allowed Wallace to safely explore the world around him. Each outing became another opportunity for him to experience something new while staying close to the person who loved him.
For Nikki, those moments carried an even deeper meaning. While caring for a cat facing a serious heart condition, she was also going through an incredibly difficult chapter of her own life.
They Needed Each Other
Nikki was undergoing cancer treatment, and Wallace became a steady source of comfort during a frightening and uncertain period. His companionship offered the kind of reassurance that sometimes needs no words. He was simply there, sharing affection and making difficult days feel a little less lonely.
Nikki has described how deeply she needed Wallace during that time. Although she had opened her home intending to care for a cat whose future was uncertain, Wallace was helping her through her own struggle, too.
Their relationship became one of mutual comfort. Nikki gave Wallace the joyful life she feared he might not have enough time to experience, while Wallace gave her companionship and love when she needed them most. And then something remarkable happened. Wallace kept going.
Now Wallace Has a Book of His Own
Wallace’s story didn’t end with the extra time he and Nikki were given together. Their journey eventually caught the attention of The Dodo and has now become a children’s book appropriately titled Wallace’s Story (The Dodo).
Written by award-winning children’s author Aubre Andrus and published by Scholastic, the 192-page book was released on September 15, 2026. It’s written for readers ages 8 to 12 and tells the true story of how Wallace came into Nikki’s care, the frightening discovery that something was wrong with his heart, and her determination to make his life wonderful no matter how much time they had together.
The book also gives young readers a much bigger look at the world surrounding Wallace. Its chapters follow his journey while exploring foster cats and the work people like Nikki do to help animals who need somewhere safe to land.
And readers get to see the real Wallace, too. The book includes an eight-page full-color photo insert, putting the face behind the story right there on the page.
For Nikki, it must be quite a thing to look back at the kitten she once feared she’d have for only six months and realize his story now fills an entire book. Wallace wasn’t supposed to have much time, yet years later, his enormous little heart is introducing a whole new generation of readers to the bond between foster animals and the people who love them.
Wallace may have been born with a heart that was physically too large, but his story also shows just how much love that heart could hold. Nikki set out to make whatever time he had meaningful, and along the way, Wallace gave that love right back when she needed it most.
Their journey is a reminder that the value of a life cannot always be measured by a prognosis. Sometimes it is measured in stroller rides, treats, quiet companionship, unexpected extra days, and now even the pages of a book carrying one very special cat’s story far beyond the home where it began.
