Apparently, some cats enjoy taking in a baseball game now and then. But one cat may not be so thrilled to hang around the ballpark after the feline found himself in a precarious situation, one that resolved by way of a big net and a padded glove.
On the Truist Park field in Atlanta, Georgia, the Atlanta Braves prepared to take on the Philadelphia Phillies in a Thursday night game. The Braves were concentrating on solidifying their fourth consecutive National League East title. But high above them, feline drama unfolded as a kitten ran back and forth across a rafter in the upper decking of the stadium.
For over an hour, the little gray-and-white cat avoided capture attempts while meowing and talking all about the ordeal.
Good Catch
The first pitch had yet to cross home plate, but the drama was already high in the upper decks at Truist Park as stadium workers did their best to catch the slippery feline with a net, ladder, and thickly padded glove. Early fans watched as the cat gave workers the slip again and again.
With the incident caught on video, one fan could be heard saying, “Awww, it’s a kitten.”
One of the workers finally ended the back and forth with a well-timed little shove that sent the kitten right off the beam and into a waiting net. The terrified cat thrashed about in the net but was soon delivered safely into the arms of a presumed animal control officer.
The feline fiasco wasn’t the first for a baseball park.
Writing for AP News, Paul Newberry related another tale of cat interruption, “The feline walked around Ron Santo in the on-deck circle and paraded in front of the Cubs’ dugout before disappearing under the stands. Seemingly cursed, Chicago squandered its lead in the NL East and the ‘Amazin’ Mets’ went on to capture the World Series.”
Cats Like Football Too
Cats don’t just haunt baseball venues, though. Football stadiums also make an excellent haven for hungry cats looking for a shadowy place to chill. When it comes to the Truist Park cat, a good catch and a 5-3 win for the Braves that gave them the NL East title made it a good night for baseball. Phillies fans assuredly weren’t happy about their loss, but at least they could celebrate the kitten catch!
