Apparently, the aliens were not hiding on Mars or traveling through some distant galaxy because they were hanging out at an animal shelter in Kansas. The shelter announced that it had “confirmed extraterrestrial life” after two unusual new arrivals appeared in its care. With their nearly hairless bodies, expressive faces, and distinctive curled ears, Elf Sphynx cats Xena and Mr. Tigger certainly looked capable of arriving aboard a tiny spacecraft.

Their owner realized they could no longer provide the care the cats needed, so Xena and Mr. Tigger arrived looking for a fresh start while staying together. Extraterrestrial Life Confirmed at Great Plains SPCA
“We have confirmed extraterrestrial life at Great Plains SPCA,” the shelter joked as it introduced its unusual new residents. One look at Xena and Mr. Tigger made it easy to see where the idea came from.
The bonded mother-and-son duo are Elf Sphynx cats, giving them an appearance that stands out even in a shelter full of memorable faces. Great Plains SPCA affectionately called them “two little aliens” while explaining that they would eventually be looking for a forever home as a pair. At the time of their introduction, Xena and Mr. Tigger were not quite ready for adoption. The shelter told followers they would be available soon, then posed one very important question: “Who’s ready to welcome two aliens into their home?”
As it turns out, someone was ready to make first contact. Great Plains SPCA later added the update everyone had been hoping to see: Xena and Mr. Tigger had been adopted.
Xena and Mr. Tigger Came as a Package Deal
Behind the alien jokes were two sweet and friendly cats going through a significant life change. Their previous owner had realized they could no longer provide the care Xena and Mr. Tigger needed, leading the pair to Great Plains SPCA for a fresh start.

Why Do Elf Sphynx Cats Look Like Little Aliens?
Those wonderfully unusual faces are part of what makes Xena and Mr. Tigger so eye-catching. Elf Sphynx cats are known for combining the nearly hairless appearance associated with the Sphynx with distinctive ears that curl backward.
The Elf is a relatively recent cat type that originated from crosses between Sphynx cats and American Curl cats. The pairing brought together two particularly recognizable traits: the Sphynx’s nearly hairless appearance and the American Curl’s signature curled ears.
Despite commonly being described as hairless, cats with Sphynx ancestry are not necessarily completely bald. Some have a very fine layer of fuzz covering their skin, which can feel quite different from the traditional furry coat most people associate with cats.
Having little or no coat can also create some additional care considerations. Skin oils that would ordinarily be distributed through fur can accumulate on the skin, while the lack of a substantial coat can leave these cats more sensitive to cold temperatures and direct sunlight.
Of course, none of that explains whether Elf Sphynx cats secretly arrived from another planet. Judging by Xena and Mr. Tigger’s curled ears and wonderfully otherworldly expressions, Great Plains SPCA might prefer to keep that investigation open.
Why Keeping Bonded Cats Together Can Matter
Cats are often thought of as solitary and fiercely independent, but they can form close social relationships with other cats. Bonded pairs may sleep together, groom one another, play together, seek each other out, or appear more relaxed when their companion is nearby.
A major transition can be particularly stressful because so much of a cat’s familiar environment changes at once. Having a trusted companion along for the journey can provide some cats with a source of familiarity as they adjust to new surroundings and eventually settle into a new home.
Not every pair of cats living together is necessarily bonded, which is why shelters and rescues can evaluate their individual relationships and needs. For Xena and Mr. Tigger, however, Great Plains SPCA knew these two belonged together and searched for a family willing to welcome them as a pair.
