A tiny kitten trapped inside a storm drain in West Valley City, Utah, received help from an unlikely rescuer: a remote-controlled robot normally used to inspect underground pipes. When a public works crew couldn’t coax the frightened little cat out, they turned to a piece of equipment affectionately named R2D2.
What followed was an unusual rescue that brought together technology, patience, and a crew determined to help one of the city’s smallest residents. The kitten eventually emerged safely, thanks to a machine that had never been designed specifically for rescuing animals.

A Tiny Kitten Trapped Underground
On Monday, October 12, the West Valley City Public Works Department’s Storm Water Crew received a call about a kitten trapped inside a storm drain. The little cat was somewhere within the underground pipe system, and the crew needed to find a way to bring the animal to safety.
Their first approach involved a pole camera, a tool that allowed workers to look inside the drainage system without entering the pipe themselves. The crew attempted to locate the kitten and encourage the animal to come out, but their initial efforts were unsuccessful.
Rather than give up, the workers considered another tool already available to their department. This one could travel through the pipes while sending live video back to the crew. The equipment was called R2D2, a custom remote-controlled crawler fitted with lights and a camera. Its usual job involved inspecting underground infrastructure, but the workers realized it might also help them reach the stranded kitten.
R2D2 Takes On An Unexpected Rescue Mission
With R2D2 ready, the crew guided the small machine into the storm drain. Its camera allowed them to follow the kitten’s movements while carefully navigating the confined space. Video shared by the city shows the crawler moving through the pipe behind the little cat. At one point, the kitten turns toward the approaching machine and meows, seemingly unsure what to make of its unusual visitor.
The crew continued guiding R2D2 through the drain, using its movement to encourage the kitten toward the opening. They needed to maneuver carefully so the animal could make its way out without being harmed. Eventually, their plan worked. R2D2 gently nudged the kitten forward until the little cat reached a waiting crew member. The rescue ended with the kitten safely in human hands, bringing a successful conclusion to a mission that had required an unexpected solution.

A Successful Rescue Gets The Community Talking
After the kitten was brought out of the drain, West Valley City shared the rescue story and footage with the public. The video concluded with a photograph of a crew member holding the white kitten with gray markings, followed by an image of R2D2.
The department celebrated the machine’s unusual accomplishment, joking that the crawler could now add kitten rescue to its growing list of responsibilities. For equipment ordinarily assigned to inspect stormwater pipes, this was certainly a different kind of assignment.
The city’s message also recognized the public works employees who had taken the time to help the stranded animal. Their willingness to try another approach after the pole camera failed ultimately made the rescue possible.
Residents responded warmly to the footage on Facebook. One commenter joked that the operation was a particularly good use of taxpayer money, while another simply admired the kitten’s appearance. Others expressed interest in adopting the little cat, although the information released did not confirm whether the kitten eventually found a permanent home. What was certain was that the animal had been successfully removed from the drain.

An Unusual New Job For A Familiar Machine
R2D2’s successful mission demonstrated how equipment designed for routine city maintenance could serve another purpose when an unexpected situation arose. The crawler’s lights, camera, and remote-controlled movement gave workers a way to approach the kitten in a location that was difficult to access.
The rescue also highlighted the crew’s persistence. When their first attempt failed, they found another practical way to help rather than leaving the kitten inside the pipe. For the little cat, the most important result was getting out of the storm drain and into the arms of a waiting worker. And for R2D2, a machine usually tasked with checking underground pipes, the day’s work ended with a rescued kitten instead of an inspection report.
