When Whiskey, a pit bull, arrived at an animal shelter in Fort Worth in September 2018, she was in a heartbreaking state. The shelter staff believed she had been used as a bait dog in a dog fighting ring. She was underweight, covered in scars and cuts, and had a bullet wound in her left shoulder. To save her life, veterinarians had to amputate her leg.

Whiskey spent several weeks at the shelter recovering from her surgery. Once she was well enough, she went to live with a foster mom named Kristen Flora. Kristen helped Whiskey learn to trust people again and enjoy being a dog.

“Watching her overcome so many obstacles was a joy,” Flora told Dallas News. “It’s inspirational to watch a dog with three limbs and a history of sadness love and just be, without question or sadness or anxiety or any of the things we experience as humans.”

After five months with Kristen, Whiskey was ready for a forever home. Kristen worked with a rescue group called Bull-luv-able Paws to find the right family for her. They shared Whiskey’s story on their Facebook page, hoping someone would give this sweet three-legged dog a chance.

“The chances of a tri-pawed, bait-dog pit bull being adopted was about 1 out of 100,000,” Missy Redding, co-founder of Bull-luv-able Paws, said. “We were not confident of her ever being adopted.”

Another Facebook page called Lucky Fin Project, which supports people with limb differences, also shared Whiskey’s story. That’s when Jeff Meyers saw her photo and felt she was the perfect dog for him. Jeff was missing his left forearm, just like Whiskey was missing her left leg.

Jeff was born without his forearm, so he understood what Whiskey was going through. When Missy heard Jeff’s story, she knew he was the right person for Whiskey.

In February 2019, Whiskey went to her new home. She and Jeff bonded right away. Whiskey loves spending time with Jeff, his wife, and their daughter. She follows Jeff around the house and enjoys going on long walks with him. They also play fetch together in their backyard.

Her Life and Her Kittens’ Lives Were Thrown Away
Her Life and Her Kittens’ Lives Were Thrown Away

A heavily pregnant calico cat was abandoned in a plastic bin bag, left to die alone and in agony. Tragically, the cat went into labor before she passed, but none of her kittens survived. Sign this petition to urge authorities to investigate this heartless act!

“I know from experience how others will view her and knew that she needed her shot at happiness,” Jeff said. “Lucky for me, it’s just that. She has brought a ton of happiness into our home.”

Whiskey is a loving dog who has found a wonderful place to call home!
