“Head butts and slow blinks good people.”

If you’re a fan of Sterling Davis, then you know this greeting well. You probably know his slogan too, but if you haven’t heard it, you’re going to love it.

“You don’t lose cool points for compassion.”

If anything, as The Original TrapKing, Sterling shows that compassion tops out your cool points.

The plight of feral and stray cats dogs the world, but with caring hearts like Sterling working for their good, more and more cats are living healthy lives as colony cats or eventually going onto to forever homes.

And beyond caring for feral cats and educating people on how they can help, the “TrapKing’s mission is to change the stereotypes of not only men in cat rescue, but also bridge the gap in communication between black communities and animal rescue/local shelters.”

Taking a job with Atlanta’s LifeLine Animal Project in 2012, Sterling realized he’d found his calling. He told Best Friends, “I realized I could be just another black guy rapping, but if I helped cats, I could really make a difference. A lot of my friends thought I was kind of weird for being into cats. But I was able to turn them around, so I knew I could do it for others. I could open up animal rescue to a whole new group of people.”

Though he’d changed friends’ minds, Sterling noticed something as he got deeper into the TNR and rescue world. He recently shared on Instagram, “When I started doing TNR, I quickly saw that I was rare. So much so that out of like 6-8 hundred people at a cat conference, I was just about the only black man there. That’s when I came up with TrapKing.”

He felt, “I need to do something to get the black community more engaged in TNR/community cat care”.

And Sterling works hard for the cause, both educating people on cats and saving kitties himself. Across social media, followers can watch his efforts, as well as learn how they help can help cats in need too. Watching him in action solidifies his slogan, proving, “you don’t lose cool points for compassion.”

He explains these words speak “about how a person can still be cool but also compassionate enough to do something like rescue cats or volunteer. It doesn’t make you weak or uncool. This applies to everything though.”

And he’s absolutely right.

Without compassion, the cats of the world who live in need would never find the comfort they deserve. And giving these wild cats love and care isn’t easy. It takes strength to face the hardships and sorrows rescuing ferals can often bring. But, for all the hardship, helping cats to live their best lives, whether wild or domesticated, is the coolest ever!
