Cat Dyed Purple And Used As Chew Toy, Lands On All Fours

| December 12, 2024

In December, a heartbreaking case surfaced in California when a small kitten was discovered stained purple with fabric dye and covered in bite wounds. The injuries were consistent with the little cat being used as a “chew toy” for fighting dogs—a cruel and unthinkable fate for such a young life. Veterinarian Monica Rudiger, who treated the kitten, shared her thoughts with The Dodo:

“We’ll never get that purple dye [completely] out of him,” she said. “I hope it ends well for him, but he seems to be doing really well.”

The kitten, now named Smurf, was brought to the Nine Lives Foundation, where his recovery journey began. Despite his painful past, Smurf demonstrated an incredible will to survive. Over the weeks, the foundation shared updates on social media, chronicling the progress of the resilient kitten.

Each photo told a story of healing as the once-injured Smurf slowly transformed into a happier, healthier version of himself. Yet, Smurf’s recovery wasn’t just about his physical improvement—it also included a heartwarming friendship.

Shortly after arriving at the shelter, Smurf bonded with another special feline resident: a blind cat named Wanda. The two quickly became inseparable, finding comfort and companionship in each other. The Nine Lives Foundation has been thrilled to see the bond between Smurf and Wanda grow stronger.

While Smurf continues to shed the signs of his difficult past, Wanda has flourished as well, leaning on her new friend for love and support. Their connection is so special that the shelter has decided they will only be adopted together when the time comes.

While Smurf and Wanda are making remarkable progress, the shelter anticipates it will take a few more months before the pair is ready to move into their forever home. For now, they are surrounded by the care and love of the foundation’s staff.

How did a woman in New Jersey accumulate 47 animals - which she then neglected horrendously - after she had already been found guilty of abuse against 99 animals in Pennsylvania? Sign the petition to ban her from ever owning or living with animals in the future!

Smurf’s story is a reminder of resilience, hope, and the power of friendship in the face of cruelty. With Wanda by his side, his future looks brighter than ever.
