Going for a hike often means coming across all sorts of wildlife. You might see birds, deer, or even the occasional fox. But imagine stumbling upon a mountain lion! For most people, that thought alone would spark fear. If you’re in the United States, running into one is quite rare. However, if you ever find yourself hiking in Patagonia, the odds of spotting a puma are much higher than you might expect.
Patagonia, located at the southernmost part of South America, is home to the highest population of pumas. Though mountain lion sightings aren’t unheard of, nothing truly prepares you for the moment you come face-to-face with one. Just ask Mariana Cabral! She recently encountered a puma up close and even managed to capture the incredible moment on camera. You can watch it in the video below!

Thankfully, a well-fed puma in Patagonia isn’t a reason to worry. In fact, it’s a good sign. Unlike in some other regions, these mountain lions don’t see humans as food. One reason for this is the vast space they have to roam in Torres del Paine National Park. Since they aren’t forced to compete with humans for territory or food, they tend to be much calmer.
How to React If You Encounter a Mountain Lion
Because there’s an abundance of prey for them in Patagonia, these big cats don’t feel the need to hunt outside their usual diet. However, that doesn’t mean hikers should let their guard down. If you ever cross paths with a mountain lion, the key is to stay calm, maintain your distance, and most importantly—never run. Running can trigger their instinct to chase, and that’s the last thing you’d want.
