Newborn photoshoots are known for tiny blankets, peaceful poses, sleepy expressions, and beautifully arranged portraits that families treasure forever. Getting those perfect photographs takes patience, even when the subject is a human baby, but Los Angeles photographer Tanya of Galaxy Photography decided to make things considerably more challenging.
She attempted the dreamy newborn session she’d been hoping to photograph for ages, except her models were five tiny gray kittens. The finished photographs look almost impossibly peaceful, with the little kittens posed like newborn babies in a soft, carefully styled setting. Behind the scenes, however, there was considerably more wiggling, wandering, waiting, and kitten-sized chaos than those serene portraits would ever suggest.
Five Kittens, One Photographer, and Absolutely No Posing Skills
Tanya specializes in newborn and family photography, so she’s accustomed to working with some very tiny clients. This particular group brought an entirely different set of challenges to the studio. Unlike people, kittens have absolutely no interest in understanding the artistic vision.
They don’t care where the photographer wants their paws. They aren’t particularly concerned about facing the camera, remaining in position, or waiting patiently while someone gets the lighting just right. If something interesting exists three inches away, there’s an excellent chance the photoshoot is temporarily heading in that direction instead.
As Tanya put it, “Tiny kittens don’t exactly follow posing directions.”
The behind-the-scenes footage proves her point beautifully. Creating each seemingly effortless portrait required patience, teamwork, and plenty of waiting for those brief moments when five curious little models happened to cooperate.

That’s part of what makes seeing the process alongside the finished photographs so entertaining. The final images capture the kittens looking like tiny professional models. They’re cuddled together in an elaborate newborn-style setup, their gray fur and sleepy little faces making the entire scene look like something straight out of a storybook.
Then there’s the reality happening just outside the frame. Instead of carefully holding poses, the kittens were busy being kittens. Getting the perfect photograph meant working around their movements rather than expecting them to behave like trained models, turning every successful shot into a tiny victory.
What looks effortless in the finished portrait may have required plenty of repositioning, patience, and waiting for a kitten to finally put its face, paws, and body in approximately the right place at the same time.
Sleepy Eyes Made the Challenge Worth It
For Tanya, the difficulty didn’t make the session any less special. She described it as a dream photoshoot and also one of the hardest she’d attempted. Watching the kittens explore their surroundings with their sleepy eyes made all that waiting worthwhile, and she was already thinking about doing another kitten session by the time this one was finished.
It’s easy to understand why. There is something ridiculously sweet about taking all the familiar details of traditional newborn photography and shrinking them down for kittens. Their tiny paws, round faces, soft gray coats, and naturally sleepy expressions fit the concept almost too perfectly. The only problem is convincing the models.
Why Photographing Kittens Takes So Much Patience
Young kittens are naturally curious about their surroundings, and their attention can shift quickly between exploring, playing, eating, and sleeping. That makes photographing them less about forcing a specific pose and more about being ready when the right moment happens naturally.
Animal photography also requires putting the subjects’ comfort first. Sessions need to move at the animals’ pace, with plenty of patience and opportunities for breaks rather than trying to make a kitten remain somewhere it doesn’t want to be.
That unpredictability can make the photographer’s job much harder, but it can also produce some of the sweetest moments. A sleepy stretch, a perfectly placed paw, or five kittens briefly settling together can suddenly become the photograph everyone was waiting for.
The Final Photos Hide the Most Adorable Secret
Without the behind-the-scenes footage, someone looking at Galaxy Photography’s finished portraits might assume those five tiny models peacefully settled into position and allowed Tanya to capture her dream session.
The reality makes the photographs even more charming. Every serene little face represents patience. Every perfectly timed pose came from waiting for five unpredictable babies to provide just the right moment. And every beautiful photograph hides the adorable chaos required to create it.
Tanya may have discovered that photographing five kittens like newborns was considerably harder than she imagined, but she also came away eager to do it again. The kittens, meanwhile, accomplished something impressive without ever learning how to pose. They wiggled, explored, ignored directions, looked impossibly cute, and somehow still delivered the photoshoot of their photographer’s dreams.
