Paul Hollywood Caught Speeding at 96mph ‘Due to Sick Cat’

Panic and heartbreak can push even the calmest pet owners into emotional decisions when a beloved animal suddenly becomes seriously ill. That was reportedly the case for television star Paul Hollywood, who ended up in court after speeding along a busy motorway while trying to get his sick cat urgent veterinary care. The Great British Bake Off judge admitted he drove dangerously fast during the stressful journey, telling police he was desperate to reach the vet as quickly as possible. What began as a frightening moment involving a cherished pet soon turned into a legal battle that drew widespread public attention.

According to court proceedings, the 60-year-old celebrity baker was stopped by Surrey Police after officers spotted his Land Rover Defender speeding along the M25 and M26 in January. Police said Hollywood reached speeds close to 100mph, with one officer believing the vehicle may have briefly exceeded 105mph during the journey.

The situation unfolded during damp and busy road conditions, making the high-speed driving even more concerning. Officers claimed Hollywood repeatedly tailgated other vehicles, leaving very little distance between cars as he tried to move through traffic quickly.

A police officer following in an unmarked car described the driving as aggressive and said Hollywood appeared to pressure motorists out of the right-hand lane.

“Whenever there was a vehicle ahead, the driver would close up to a follow distance of less than five metres,” the officer stated in court documents.

The tense motorway journey came to an end when police pulled Hollywood over and questioned him about his behavior. It was then that he reportedly explained he was rushing his ill cat to the vet as quickly as possible.

For many pet owners, the fear of losing a beloved animal companion can trigger panic and emotional decisions. While the court acknowledged Hollywood’s explanation, officials also stressed the importance of road safety, especially in crowded and wet driving conditions.

Hollywood later pleaded guilty to speeding at Worthing Magistrates’ Court. He received five penalty points on his driving licence, along with a £293 fine, £120 in court costs, and a £117 victim surcharge.

A separate charge of driving without due care and attention was ultimately dropped following legal discussions.

His lawyer said Hollywood accepted responsibility for his actions and expressed regret over the incident.

“Mr Hollywood accepted he was driving too fast,” said Peter Csemiczky, partner at Hickman and Rose law firm. He added that the television star apologized and understood punishment would follow.

The case also revealed that Hollywood previously had a clean driving record with no penalty points before the incident occurred.

Outside of television, Hollywood is known for his passion for cars and motorsports. He has even competed professionally in Aston Martin racing events, making the court appearance especially surprising to some fans.

Still, at the center of the story was a frightened pet owner reacting emotionally to a medical emergency involving a cherished cat. While the court ruled his actions crossed legal boundaries, the incident also highlighted the intense bond many people share with their animals and how quickly fear can lead to poor decisions under pressure.
