A tiny orange kitten named Rocky was rescued from beneath a pile of heavy rocks inside a dark drainpipe near a Tennessee highway after two determined animal lovers followed his desperate cries. Barely a month old, the little kitten had somehow become trapped where he could not free himself, and finding him would require a careful search in the middle of the night.
Holly, a volunteer with Chattanooga cat rescue SCRATCH, Inc., and her husband set out late one Friday after learning that a kitten was crying near the Hixson YMCA. They had no idea how difficult reaching him would become, but they were determined to find the source of those tiny cries.

A Desperate Search Inside A Dark Drainpipe
Rocky’s rescuers believe someone may have left him near the highway at the top of a hill where a large drainage pipe began. The kitten apparently entered the drainage system through an opening beneath a concrete wall, possibly seeking shelter.
When Holly and her husband arrived, they first searched near the freeway, where the cries sounded loudest. Concerned that the kitten might wander into traffic, they blocked the upper opening before heading downhill to investigate the other end of the pipe.
By then, darkness had made locating him especially difficult. The couple played recordings of kitten sounds on a phone, hoping the frightened little cat would respond and help them determine his position.
Their efforts eventually led them to a frightening discovery. Rocky was trapped beneath several large rocks, which his rescuers believed had fallen while they were searching near the freeway.
A Tiny Tail Leads Rescuers To Rocky
Holly’s husband searched the darkness with his flashlight until he spotted something that gave them hope. The very tip of a kitten’s tail was visible among the rocks.
He carefully began removing the heavy stones one by one, working his way toward the little animal hidden underneath. Each rock brought him closer to reaching the kitten whose cries had guided them through the night.
When Rocky was finally uncovered, the couple discovered something remarkable. Despite being pinned beneath the rocks, the tiny kitten appeared completely unharmed. The rescue became even sweeter when Rocky was lifted into his rescuer’s arms. Instead of continuing to cry, he began purring almost immediately.
“The minute I pulled him to me, he immediately began to purr,” Holly told Love Meow.
The couple named him Rocky, a fitting reminder of both the unusual circumstances of his rescue and the little kitten who had survived them.

From A Drainpipe To A Warm Foster Home
Once Rocky was safely in Holly’s care, he received a gentle flea bath and a much-needed meal. His rescuer also returned to the drainage pipe several times over the following days to check whether any other kittens might have been left behind.
No additional kittens were found, and Rocky began settling into foster life with the same person who had helped save him. His progress was encouraging. Over just two weeks, Rocky’s weight increased from approximately one pound to two pounds.
As he grew, his playful personality became impossible to miss. Holly described him as affectionate, enthusiastic about food, and especially fond of feather wand toys. Rocky also surprised his foster mom with how quickly he could learn. Despite his young age, he had already mastered giving a high five on command.
Rocky Finds Comfort In A Special Stuffed Cat
Among Rocky’s favorite belongings is a heartbeat-stuffed cat that rests on his bed. The soft toy provides a gentle pulsing sensation designed to resemble a heartbeat, giving the young kitten something comforting to curl against.
Rocky has become especially attached to his stuffed companion, often settling beside it when he rests. For a kitten found alone in such an unusual and dangerous place, having a warm, comfortable foster environment has made an enormous difference in his daily life.

For now, Rocky will remain with Holly until he is old enough to be neutered. After that, he will be ready for adoption and the chance to find a permanent family.
The little orange kitten who once cried from beneath heavy rocks is now growing, playing with feather wands, practicing his high fives, and curling up beside his beloved stuffed cat.
