Bazooka Joe isn’t your average cat. In fact, the big orange tabby far outweighs average and tips the scale with a whopping weight of 36 lbs. And a kitty so large has tons of love to give.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Wake County introduced the chonky cat by way of social media, proclaiming, “Get ready for a lotta love!”

The big guy came to the SPCA of Wake County by way of a transfer shelter after the death of Joe’s human companion. His companion suffered from dementia, so it’s believed Joe’s elderly dad filled the food bowl upon finding it empty, not remembering he’d already fed his beloved cat. And cats love to eat, so Joe just couldn’t help himself and turned into the tubby tabby of the present.

“He thought he was doing the best thing for his cat by feeding him,” said Wake SPCA communications director Darci VanderSlik. “We need to look on this with a compassionate view. He was loved.”

And this was evident as Joe’s behavior was nothing but affectionate.

“This cat is the coolest cat ever. He’s so mellow and chill,” Darci told The Dodo. “He’s just happy all the time.”

Prince of a Cat Earns a Royal Name and Forever Home

Joe spent some time with foster mom Michelle Barry and began working on his weight loss journey, but it wasn’t long before his forever home came knocking.

Robin Anderson lost her beloved Maine Coon not long ago and had reached a place where she felt ready to bring another kitty home. As she was searching a Maine Coon Rescue Community on Facebook, a picture of beautiful behemoth Bazooka Joe appeared and Robin got that feeling cat lovers get when the special connection of love is born.

She knew Joe was meant to be part of her family as Robin herself had undergone a major weight loss journey. Robin lost over 120 pounds through discipline and marathons! Of Robin, Darci said, “So she was super excited to step in and help him and document his weight loss journey. She even wants to harness train him so he can get some cardio.”

What a purrfect pairing!

Robin reported Joe has earned a new royal moniker. The flabby tabby is known now as King Augustus.

And the King is doing well!

Two months after his adoption, King has lost two pounds. This may not sound like much, but when weighing in at 36 lbs., and then dropping two means King has already lost 5.5% of his massive body weight. Way to go, big boi!

Rising Social Media Star

Robin bought an adorable pram to stroll King Augustus about the neighborhood, and judging by the photo, he loves his ride. And the pair loves the reaction they get when it’s realized the pram is full of “big orange floof!”
