A terrified cat is safe today after an alarming rescue on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge in Maryland turned what could have been a heartbreaking tragedy into a story of compassion and quick action. Responding officers rushed to the bridge after a witness reported that someone had allegedly tried to throw a cat from a moving vehicle. By the time they arrived, the frightened feline was no longer inside a car. Instead, it was stranded on the outside of the bridge, clinging to a dangerous spot high above the roadway while rescuers worked carefully to bring it to safety.
The Prince George’s County Division of the Maryland National Capital Park Police shared details of the rescue in a Facebook post. The incident unfolded on the bridge near Alexandria, Virginia, where officers quickly searched for the frightened animal after receiving the report.
Photos released by the department showed an orange-and-cream-colored cat curled tightly against the bridge structure. The fuzzy feline appeared frightened and unsure of where to go, staying close to the narrow ledge while looking toward the approaching officer. The isolated location highlighted just how vulnerable the cat had become. The rescue required patience and calm reassurance. Rather than rushing toward the frightened animal, the responding officer gently encouraged the cat with a soothing voice.

“Come on, I got you,” the officer can be heard saying in a video shared by the department.
The frightened cat slowly made its way along the edge of the bridge, carefully placing one paw after another. As the officer continued offering encouragement, saying, “You can do it,” the cat found the confidence to leap onto a higher ledge before making another jump toward the bridge railing closer to safety.
The tense moments captured in the video revealed just how frightened the animal was. The cat hesitated several times, staying close to the barrier while cautiously listening to the officer’s voice. Every careful movement brought it one step farther from danger and one step closer to rescue. Thankfully, the rescue ended without injury.

According to the police department, the frightened cat was safely recovered thanks to the combination of a concerned citizen who reported the situation and the officer’s swift response. Once safely in the officer’s arms, the cat appeared noticeably calmer than it had been only moments earlier. A photo shared afterward even captured the feline in the middle of a relaxed yawn, a striking contrast to the fear seen during the rescue.
The department praised both the person who reported the incident and the responding officer for acting quickly to protect a defenseless animal.
Officials emphasized that suspected acts of animal cruelty are treated seriously and noted that timely reports from witnesses can make a critical difference when an animal’s safety is at risk. In this case, that quick phone call likely gave the cat the chance it needed.
Investigation Continues

While the rescue ended on a hopeful note, authorities are continuing to investigate what led to the frightening ordeal. According to local station ABC 7 News, investigators are treating the case as suspected animal cruelty.
Although questions remain about how the cat ended up stranded on the bridge, one thing is certain. Thanks to the compassion of a vigilant passerby and the calm determination of a responding officer, a frightened cat that faced extraordinary danger now has a second chance to recover in safety.
