Every cat owner knows that even the sweetest feline can leave behind a few mysteries around the litter box. Strange odors, scattered litter, and crumbling clumps are hardly the glamorous side of sharing a home with a cat, but Tidy Cats is turning those everyday frustrations into something unexpectedly entertaining. The Purina brand has launched the Special Litter Unit, or S.L.U., a playful crime procedural starring actor and comedian Kumail Nanjiani, where some of the most familiar litter box problems are treated like serious offenses worthy of a full investigation.

The three-part series casts Nanjiani as the lead agent of an elite unit devoted to tracking down the culprits behind messy litter boxes. He is joined by content creator Jordan Howlett, who steps into the role of a rookie officer helping investigate the evidence left behind by their feline suspects.

With Tidy Cats Performance+ serving as part of their investigative arsenal, the pair takes on cases involving odors, tracking, and troublesome clumps. The campaign gives the familiar style of television crime dramas a humorous feline twist, turning ordinary moments cat families know well into dramatic investigations. Nanjiani brings some genuine cat experience to the role, too.

“I’ve been a cat person my whole life, so I know exactly what a litter box crime looks like,” Nanjiani said. He added that life with his late cat, Bagel, and his new kitten, Biscuit, has given him years of unofficial preparation for leading the Special Litter Unit.

Familiar Cat Problems Become Serious Cases

The first Special Litter Unit episode premiered October 1 across the Tidy Cats Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube channels, with additional installments scheduled throughout the week. Each investigation focuses on an all too familiar litter box offense. Cases range from “odor in the first degree” to tracking violations and clumping catastrophes, giving everyday pet care problems the dramatic treatment normally reserved for television crime scenes.

Behind the comedy are issues that can genuinely frustrate cat owners. Marilyn Renner, a product development expert at Tidy Cats, said odor, weak clumps, and tracking are among the problems that repeatedly show up for people living with cats.

Those concerns are also the focus of Tidy Cats Performance+, the company’s advanced litter line. The campaign uses humor to introduce the products while keeping the problems recognizable to anyone who has ever discovered litter scattered well beyond the box.

The Performance+ line includes three formulas aimed at different litter box concerns. Active Clean is designed to neutralize bacterial odors at their source rather than simply covering them up, while Power Clump is formulated to create strong clumps with minimal sticking.

Tidy Feet takes a different approach by using flat granules intended to reduce how much litter rolls out of the box. According to Tidy Cats, the formula provides 64 percent less tracking compared with the leading clumping litter.

Adoptable Cats Join the Investigation

The fictional investigation also stepped into the real world through Litter Crimes HQ, a one-day New York City experience held October 2 at 45Grand in SoHo. Visitors entered as new S.L.U. recruits and could put their investigative abilities to work through interactive missions inspired by the campaign. Instead of simply watching Nanjiani and Howlett investigate litter crimes on screen, guests had an opportunity to become part of the playful crime-solving world themselves.

The event also featured some particularly charming agents. Adoptable cats from Petfinder joined the experience as feline members of the team, adding a real adoption component to the lighthearted campaign.

For visitors, meeting those cats offered something warmer than solving a fictional litter box mystery. Behind the costumes, cases, and comedy were real animals waiting to make connections with people and potentially find homes of their own.

The Special Litter Unit ultimately takes one of the less appealing realities of cat ownership and turns it into a shared joke between people who understand it firsthand. Cats may be graceful, mysterious, and endlessly lovable, but their litter boxes can occasionally leave their humans wondering exactly what happened.

With Nanjiani leading the investigation and adoptable cats getting their moment in the spotlight, Tidy Cats has transformed those everyday messes into a playful case worth cracking.
