A tiny stray kitten arrived at the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City over the Fourth of July weekend looking so unusual that staff immediately knew he needed help. His little face was sweet and curious, but his head was dramatically swollen, raising fears that something serious could be wrong. Yet beneath his alarming appearance was an affectionate kitten who seemed far more interested in being held and cuddled than worrying about the people examining him. His gentle personality quickly captured everyone’s heart, including CEO Sydney Mollentine, who changed her holiday plans to make sure he received the care he needed.

Mollentine had been spending the weekend with her family when a staff member sent her an urgent text about the newly arrived kitten. One look at his photo was enough to convince her that his condition could not wait.
She gathered her children, got into the car, and headed straight to the shelter. When she arrived, she found a kitten whose behavior seemed almost at odds with his frightening appearance. Despite the swelling, he remained active, calm and remarkably affectionate. Rather than pulling away from the people trying to help him, he happily accepted every pet and cuddle they offered.
“He was still very sweet and active,” Mollentine told The Dodo. “It didn’t really seem to bother him a whole lot.”
His unusually large head soon inspired the shelter staff to give him a fitting nickname: Megamind.
A Frightening Possibility Gives Way to Hope
Mollentine and the medical team began examining Megamind to determine the cause of the swelling. One major concern was hydrocephalus, a serious condition involving an abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain.
However, as Mollentine carefully felt the swollen area, she began to suspect that the problem might lie outside his brain. The swelling felt soft and filled with fluid, suggesting that Megamind could instead have an abscess.
“I had suspicions when I felt it that it was more of an abscess versus hydrocephalus just because of the way it was really bouncy and fluid-filled,” Mollentine said.
The team performed an X-ray to examine his skull and check for abnormalities or fractures. Thankfully, the results brought the news everyone had been hoping to hear.

Megamind’s skull looked normal. The dramatic swelling was caused by an abscess, giving the team a much clearer path toward helping him recover.
The fluid needed to be carefully drained from his head. Even during the procedure, Megamind continued showing the trusting personality that had already made him a shelter favorite. Instead of struggling against the people treating him, the little kitten remained remarkably still. He seemed to understand that the hands surrounding him were there to help.
“He was such a trooper,” Mollentine said. “He just sat there and continued to be a sweet cat.”
Ironically, the part that upset Megamind most had nothing to do with his treatment. Once the procedure was finished, the cuddles stopped, and he had to return to his kennel.
“He was extremely agitated and angry that we had stopped holding him,” Mollentine said. After everything he had endured, Megamind apparently had one strong demand: more affection.
He remained in the hospital for about a week while recovering. As the swelling disappeared and his health improved, the kitten underneath that enormous forehead finally had the chance to shine. Megamind emerged from treatment feeling much better, but his story still had one more heartwarming turn. Once he was healthy enough for adoption, he did not have to wait long for a family.

The person who originally found Megamind and helped bring him to safety decided to adopt him permanently. The stranger who had once made sure a vulnerable kitten reached the shelter ultimately became the person who gave him a home.
“He’s been adopted by the person that actually found him … So [a] perfect full circle moment there,” Mollentine said.
Megamind entered the shelter as a tiny stray with a frighteningly swollen head and an uncertain future. He left healthy, deeply loved and headed home with the very person whose kindness had started his journey to recovery.
