A tiny life hung in the balance when a 6-week-old kitten was brought into the Humane Society of North Texas on March 31, after a concerned passerby discovered him trapped in a bucket of industrial adhesive. His fragile body was completely coated in thick glue, leaving him unable to move, eat, or care for himself in any way. Each breath seemed uncertain as the sticky substance hardened around his face and limbs, turning an already terrifying situation into a race against time for the rescuers determined to save him.

The kitten, later named Elmer, arrived in heartbreaking condition. Thick glue covered him from ear to tail, hardening around his face and sealing off vital areas like his mouth and eyes. He was limp, severely dehydrated, and barely responsive. Staff immediately understood that every second mattered.
According to Cassie Davidson, senior director of marketing and communications at HSNT, the team began lifesaving care the moment he came through their doors. The person who found Elmer had no idea how he ended up in such a dangerous situation. It is believed he accidentally fell into the adhesive and could not escape.
A Race Against Time
The glue had already started to harden, threatening to restrict Elmer’s breathing and movement even further. His tiny body was trapped in place, and without quick intervention, survival would have been unlikely.
Rescuers worked urgently to find a safe way to remove the adhesive. They tested several options, including olive oil and dish soap, but nothing seemed strong enough to break through the thick coating. Finally, they turned to canola oil, a simple but effective solution.

What followed was hours of careful, hands-on work. Nearly two gallons of oil were used as staff gently massaged it into Elmer’s fur. The process lasted over four hours. Every movement was slow and deliberate to avoid causing pain or further injury.
It was exhausting and delicate work. The team monitored Elmer closely, ensuring he stayed stable throughout. Despite everything he had endured, the tiny kitten remained calm. He did not fight or panic. Instead, he seemed to trust the hands working to save him.
From Fragile to Flourishing
Once the glue was fully removed, Elmer’s transformation began. Free from the heavy coating, he could finally move and breathe more easily. His condition stabilized, and his personality slowly started to shine through.
In the days that followed, Elmer revealed a gentle and affectionate nature. He began seeking out attention, leaning into soft touches as if making up for the comfort he had been denied. What once felt like a desperate fight for survival turned into moments of warmth and care.
He was later moved into a foster home where his recovery continued. Some areas of his skin needed extra attention due to irritation from the glue and removal process. Even so, the hardest part was behind him.

Now back under the shelter’s care for final tests, Elmer is steadily improving. His caregivers describe him as remarkably sweet, a kitten who seems to believe that gentle care and affection are simply part of life.
Though he is not yet ready for adoption, his future looks bright. With a bit more time and healing, Elmer will soon be ready to start a new chapter, one filled with safety, comfort, and love.
