Kitten Who Was Afraid Of Everything, Changes After Being Bet

| January 21, 2025

A shy Calico kitten lived quietly among a group of stray cats in a busy towing lot, doing her best to avoid people and the many dangers around her. Life in the lot was tough, filled with uncertainty and fear. But everything began to change when a compassionate foster volunteer reached out to her with a gentle touch. That small moment of kindness became the catalyst for a remarkable transformation, leading the kitten from a life of hiding and fear to one filled with love, care, and hope.

The rescue story began when a towing company contacted Alley Cat Project, a volunteer cat rescue organization, about the stray cats inhabiting an abandoned boat on their property. The company was concerned for the cats’ safety, as the lot was filled with sharp objects and active vehicle movement. The rescue team responded by setting humane traps and installing cameras to safely capture the cats.

Among the group was a small Calico kitten, drawn to the scent of food. Eventually, the team caught her along with two orange tabby cats. Suspecting they might be related, foster volunteer Josh Norem stepped in to care for them. While the Tabbies adjusted quickly, the little calico remained fearful and defensive, hissing and swatting at any attempt to interact with her.

When Josh spent one-on-one time with her, however, her demeanor began to change. She started to relax, and for the first time, she purred and allowed Josh to pet her. Reflecting on her progress in an interview, Josh shared, “It took her a few days to come out of her shell and start to trust me, but when she did, the most amazing thing happened. At one point, she reached out for my hand, then lifted it up to her face and gently licked it a few times.”

The kitten, later named Katy Purry, began to show her true personality. She explored her surroundings with curiosity, her confidence growing with each day. She purred loudly, relished belly rubs, and even stretched out as if asking for more affection. It was clear that Katy was beginning to understand what love felt like.

After a few weeks, Josh discovered a small wound on Katy’s belly and sought medical attention for her. Despite her tiny size—likely a result of malnutrition—Katy’s health improved. She then transitioned to another foster home with Patti, who continued to nurture her newfound joy for life. Patti noted, “She is initially shy but readily works up to a loud purr. She seeks pets and especially seems to love chin scratches.”

Now adopted into her forever home, Katy rediscovered her playful side, darting through cat tunnels and chasing chirping bird toys. She also bonded with Patti’s adult cat, who acted as a gentle guide. Surrounded by warmth, affection, and delicious meals, Katy embraced her new life.
