From the outside, the old backyard shed looked like nothing more than a forgotten storage space, but inside it held a heartbreaking secret waiting to be discovered. What began as two German Shepherds refusing to leave the area soon turned into an emotional rescue that no one expected. Their unusual persistence caught the attention of Ohio resident Brett Dugas and his girlfriend, Guste, who decided to investigate after noticing their dogs acting strangely for several days. Their curiosity led them to two vulnerable kittens trapped inside the locked shed, proving that sometimes the keen instincts of loyal dogs can make all the difference in saving innocent lives.

At first, Brett Dugas and his girlfriend, Guste, believed their dogs were simply interested in one of the neighborhood groundhogs that often wandered around the abandoned shed. The structure had been locked for years and was packed with old tools, making it an unlikely place for anything else. But as the days passed, the dogs’ determination only grew stronger.
The pair of German Shepherds, Mya and Livia, kept returning to the same spot. They sniffed relentlessly around the door and refused to lose interest.
“Mya and Livia were just all over the door,” Dugas told The Dodo. “I mean, just sniffing. And then Mya started digging at the ground right by it.”
Their persistence convinced Dugas that something more than a groundhog had captured their attention. Curious and concerned, he walked around the aging shed looking for clues.
As he peered through one of the dirty, weathered windows, he spotted something heartbreaking.
Inside sat a tiny gray kitten with his eyes tightly shut, crying for help.
“I just happened to look through the dirty, dilapidated window and barely peek, and I just see this little gray kitten sitting there with his eyes closed, just meowing,” Dugas said.
The sight immediately changed everything. Dugas had no idea how long the kitten had been trapped inside without food, water, or proper care. Knowing every minute mattered, he asked a neighbor to bring bolt cutters so they could finally open the locked shed.
Once inside, Dugas carefully picked up the frightened kitten. It quickly became clear that the little cat’s eyes were badly infected and needed urgent treatment. Even so, he wanted to be certain no other animals had been left behind.
A Second Tiny Survivor

After taking another careful look around the cluttered interior, Dugas discovered a second kitten hiding quietly in one corner of the shed.
The brothers had somehow ended up trapped together, relying on each other while waiting for someone to find them. Without the sharp noses and determination of Mya and Livia, the kittens may have remained hidden much longer.
Dugas wasted no time contacting Lucky Paws Rescue, which immediately agreed to take both kittens into its care.
The rescue team confirmed that each kitten was suffering from eye infections, but there was encouraging news. With medication and proper treatment, both babies responded quickly.
“They’re reacting well to the medicine, and [the rescuer] said they’re going to heal fine,” Dugas said.
Within only 10 days, the kittens had already shown remarkable improvement. Their infections were clearing, their strength was returning, and they were beginning to enjoy the safety and comfort they had been missing.
Dugas even gave the rescued brothers fitting names inspired by where they were found: BARNey and SHEDeur.
Today, the playful kittens are thriving under the rescue’s care. Once they are old enough, they will be neutered and placed up for adoption, where they can begin the next chapter of their lives with loving families.
Their remarkable rescue serves as a reminder that animals often notice things people miss. Whether Mya and Livia were simply following an interesting scent or instinctively responding to kittens in distress, their persistence ultimately saved two vulnerable lives.

As Dugas reflected on the experience, he appreciated the important role his dogs played.
“Whether Mya and Livia’s intentions were to smell a snack or help do the right thing, either way, their noses played a huge part in making it happen,” he said.
Thanks to two determined German Shepherds, a locked shed no longer held a heartbreaking secret. Instead, it became the place where two tiny kittens were given the fresh start they deserved.
