Crews were gathered for the department’s September 11 Remembrance Ceremony when an unexpected little visitor created a rescue assignment right in front of them. A tiny tabby kitten had somehow gotten himself stuck on the department’s platform truck and needed a little help returning to solid ground.
Fortunately, he couldn’t have chosen a much better place to get himself into trouble. The people standing nearby happened to be professional rescuers, and they weren’t about to leave their smallest patient stranded.
An Unexpected Rescue During the Ceremony
The Coral Springs Fire Department shared the unusual interruption on Facebook, admitting the kitten rescue definitely wasn’t part of the morning’s planned events. While the department was holding its September 11 Remembrance Ceremony, crews discovered the little tabby stuck on their platform truck.
Exactly how the kitten ended up there remains unknown, but anyone familiar with kittens, however, probably won’t be shocked that a tiny cat managed to climb somewhere without developing an equally detailed plan for getting back down. The firefighters stepped in and safely brought him back to the ground. What could have ended as one cute rescue call then took an even sweeter turn. Someone watching had apparently already fallen for him.
One Spectator Decides the Kitten Isn’t Leaving Alone
Among the people attending the ceremony was a spectator who decided the newly rescued kitten needed more than a safe trip back to the ground. According to the fire department, that person offered him a forever home.
That meant the tabby’s morning changed remarkably quickly. He went from being stuck on a fire truck to being rescued by firefighters and apparently finding a family before the day was over. It was an unexpectedly happy outcome in a somber moment. Instead of simply wandering away after his rescue, he would leave with someone prepared to make sure his future adventures started from the safety of a home.
The fire department’s update also included one more detail that made the whole story even sweeter. They had heard the little guy might be getting a very fitting new name.
Meet the Kitten Who Might Be Called ‘Hero’
The kitten’s new name may be “Hero,” according to the Coral Springs Fire Department. Considering how his adoption story began, it’s difficult to imagine a name that would fit the occasion much better.
Of course, the tiny tabby wasn’t the one doing the rescuing that morning. His contribution mostly involved climbing onto a large piece of fire apparatus, getting stuck, and being adorable enough to leave with one of the people who watched firefighters bring him down.
That’s still a fairly impressive day’s work for someone small enough to be carried in a firefighter’s hands. Plenty of cats spend years developing elaborate strategies for getting humans to do exactly what they want, while this kitten may have accomplished the ultimate goal in a single morning.
The department joked that he had picked “a pretty good day to hang out with the fire department.” Given that his visit ended with a rescue and a potential forever home, Hero might agree.
Fire Stations and Kittens Have a Surprisingly Long History
Dogs may be the animals most famously associated with firehouses, particularly Dalmatians, but cats have also found their way into fire stations over the years. Some become unofficial station cats after repeatedly visiting, while others arrive because firefighters encounter them during calls and rescues.
For a curious kitten, a fire truck can also offer plenty of tempting places to explore. Large vehicles contain compartments, equipment, wheels, and tucked-away spaces, which is one reason checking around vehicles for hidden animals can be important before they’re moved.
Hero’s particular adventure fortunately happened while firefighters were right there to notice him. Rather than remaining trapped or disappearing somewhere else inside the apparatus, he was spotted and safely removed. His timing also meant plenty of people were nearby when he needed somewhere to go next. One of those people apparently needed a kitten just as much as the kitten needed them.
