Shelter staff at Great Plains SPCA were completely stunned when they spotted a flash of bright pink fur inside a newly arrived cat’s crate. The confused but calm kitty, later identified as Casper, had just been surrendered after his previous owners could no longer care for him. At first glance, the team could hardly process what they were seeing. Curled quietly in the corner of his carrier was a fluffy cat covered in an unusual rosy tint that made him look almost unreal. Staff members gathered around the crate in disbelief, wondering whether the lovable feline had somehow actually turned pink.
“[W]e’re looking in his crate, and we’re going, ‘What happened to him? Is he actually pink?’” Hathaway Maranda, Great Plains SPCA’s vice president of philanthropy and engagement, told The Dodo.
As surprising as Casper’s appearance was, the story behind it turned out to be completely accidental. His former owners explained that their daughter had been dyeing her hair when curious Casper leaped into the sink and rolled in the leftover dye. The unexpected mishap left the sweet cat sporting a bubblegum-pink coat that instantly made him unforgettable.
Even though the color looked adorable, shelter staff were concerned about Casper’s safety first. They quickly brought him to a veterinarian to ensure the dye wouldn’t harm him or make him sick while grooming himself.
Thankfully, the vet confirmed that Casper was perfectly healthy. The pink tint would simply fade over time as his fur naturally grew out.
“It is not something we’re going to remove from him because it’ll just naturally grow out,” Maranda said.
While Casper adjusted to life at the shelter, his unusual appearance quickly turned him into a local celebrity. Staff members who had never seen a pink cat before couldn’t resist giving him playful nicknames and showering him with extra attention.
“Instead of Casper the Friendly Ghost, we say Casper the Pink Cat,” Maranda said.
Casper seemed completely unfazed by all the excitement surrounding him. If anything, he appeared to enjoy the extra affection. Shelter workers noticed how calm and friendly he remained despite the sudden changes in his life.
“I don’t think he knows, or he sort of likes the attention,” Maranda said. “He either has no idea or he’s just like, ‘Wow, everyone thinks I’m so cute now.’”
But beneath the eye-catching fur was an even more lovable personality.
A Sweet Cat With a Bright Future
The staff quickly fell in love with Casper, not because of his pink coloring, but because of his affectionate and gentle nature. He happily greeted people, soaked up attention, and charmed everyone who spent time with him.
“We love him,” Maranda said. “He’s adorable. He’s really friendly with all of us.”
For Casper, arriving at the shelter could have been a confusing and stressful experience. Losing the only home he knew and adjusting to a new environment was undoubtedly a big change. Yet through it all, he remained trusting, loving, and eager for companionship.
His cheerful spirit touched everyone around him.
It didn’t take long for someone to recognize what a special cat Casper truly was. Just one week after arriving at Great Plains SPCA, the lovable pink kitty found a new forever family.
Now, Casper is settling comfortably into his new home, where he can leave shelter life behind and enjoy the safety, warmth, and love he deserves. His famous pink fur may eventually disappear, but the happiness he brought to so many people will not be forgotten anytime soon.
“He really was a sweet guy, and we are so happy he has found a loving forever home,” Maranda said.
