The day began with your cat patiently waiting for food as usual, but she may have also been trying to tell you something special about today.

June 4 marks Hug Your Cat Day!

And cat lovers everywhere are pawsitively thrilled to celebrate.

Some of the kitties are ready for the snuggles too, looking happy in their hugs on social media. But other cats say love from afar will be just fine. Yet, they somehow get caught in their parent’s arms anyway! And their faces sure show their feelings about it in posts shared on social media.

Happy hugger!

Cat behaviorist Anita Kelsey explains some cats don’t care for hugs as they “hate the feeling of entrapment and not being in control.”

Felines who don’t want snuggles will let you know, and usually in no uncertain terms. “A cat that doesn’t like being held or picked up will struggle to get away or hiss to tell you it is not happy.”

Kelsey warns you might “even get a nip to say ‘put me down’.”

But a cat who enjoys cuddling will let you know about their enjoyment through happy chirps, trills, and purring.

And this selection of kitties from across social media illustrates the differences between cats who want hugs versus those that don’t!

And sometimes a hug can inspire both joy and irritation in a cat. Like this silly mæw who first gave mom a kiss, quickly followed by a swat!

This cat lover is going to hug her cat. But only if he wants one! Here’s to hoping…
