Leaving pets home alone can feel stressful for owners, but one professional pet sitter recently proved just how important daily check-ins can be. What started as a routine visit quickly turned into a frightening situation for two cats trapped overnight in a dangerously hot apartment. The moment pet sitter Julie Nashawaty opened the door, she sensed something was terribly wrong. A loud noise filled the home, the air felt unbearably warm, and both terrified cats were clearly in distress. Within moments, she uncovered a shocking scene that may have prevented a devastating apartment fire.

Pet sitters do far more than refill food bowls and scoop litter boxes. They provide comfort, safety, and peace of mind when families are away. For one pair of cats, that daily visit may have prevented a devastating house fire.
Julie Nashawaty, a professional pet sitter, recently shared a shocking experience on TikTok after arriving at a client’s apartment for a routine cat check-in. The moment she stepped through the door, something felt wrong.
The apartment was unusually hot. A loud, continuous noise echoed through the home. Both cats were visibly distressed.
“As a catsitter, I definitely have some crazy stories that lead to further reasons of how important it is to always have a cat sitter check in on your cats at a MINIMUM of once a day,” Nashawaty wrote in the video caption.
As she searched for the source of the sound, Nashawaty discovered a hair dryer plugged in and somehow switched on. The appliance had been blasting hot air directly into a blanket for hours.
The scene was deeply unsettling.

One terrified cat had climbed onto a tall dresser, trying to escape the unbearable heat and constant noise. The other paced nervously through the apartment, unable to relax in the chaotic environment. With no one home overnight, the frightened pets had endured the stressful situation alone for hours.
Nashawaty immediately unplugged the hair dryer and comforted the shaken cats, helping restore calm to the apartment.
The pet sitter later admitted she still has no idea how the hair dryer turned on by itself. But the experience left her rattled, especially given how close the situation came to becoming a fire hazard.
A Frightening Reminder for Pet Owners
Leaving appliances plugged in can pose serious risks, especially when pets are home alone. Heated devices like hair dryers can quickly become dangerous if accidentally activated or knocked over.
For indoor pets, even non-life-threatening situations can create intense fear and anxiety. Loud sounds, rising temperatures, and unfamiliar stressors can leave animals confused and panicked, with nowhere to escape.
Nashawaty used the frightening experience to remind fellow pet owners to double-check their homes before leaving.

“This is a serious reminder to always unplug your hairdryer after use,” she shared. “It only takes a moment for things to go horribly wrong. Keep your home and more importantly, your babies safe!”
Thankfully, these two cats were unharmed, and one attentive visit made all the difference. What started as an ordinary check-in became a powerful reminder of how important daily pet care can truly be.
@julienashawaty As a catsitter, I definitely have some crazy stories that lead to further reasons of how important it is to always having a catsitter check in on your cats at a MINIMUM of once a day. This particular day I experienced a scary situation that could have easily turned into a fire! I walked into a clients house and heard a strange noise and found a hairdryer plugged in and somehow TURNED ON in a freak accident in the house! The apartment was sweltering hot with the hairdryer blasting heat into a blanket and these two babies were all by themselves all night! This is a serious reminder to always unplug your hairdryer after use. It only takes a moment for things to go horribly wrong.
