Cat lovers will do just about anything to help a cat in need. Even if that cat is a wild kitten with his protective mother standing guard. One might as well be dealing with a tiger when it comes to feral cat mom.
But, her sweet darling baby needed major help as both his eyes were covered in extremely thick scabbing. Beneath those scabs, infection surely festered. The poor little ginger was bumping and stumbling, unable to find his mother’s milk in his dark world. The kind soul who discovered the family couldn’t stand by and not help the wild kitten.

“If I go close to them, I’m afraid the mother cat will run away with her baby,” he said.
A valid point. Kitty cats who feel any kind of threat will run before they ask questions. Couple this tendency with a mother’s concern and he’s right, the mother would most definitely take off with her little one.

But, hunger can blunt the need to run away…
A Bowl of Food and a Catch is Made
Once food is offered to the wild family, they emerge weary. Still, curious cat paws make their way to the bowl. While the rest of her family chows down, the orange tabby kitten wanders blindly, unable to find the source of the appetizing scent.

While mom and the other kittens eat, rescue workers try to move in, but the mom stays “very alert”. What she doesn’t understand, “We are here to help her kid, but for her, we are just a strange invader.”
An aromatherapist was on scene to assist as well. Armed with a cushion filled with relaxing herbs, the workers hope to calm the mom. According to the aromatherapist, “The flower scent will relieve her stress.”
It works and the mom settles down. With the grey tabby settled down, the vet swoops in, catching the ginger kitten.
Uncovering A Problem
Once transported to the vet’s office, the extent of the problem can be seen.

The scabs are thick across his eyes and oozing puss, but once cleaned away, the vet diagnoses the problem.
While the orange tabby kitten’s eyes should have opened roughly ten days after birth, an infection occurred and caused the scabbing to seal the baby’s eyes shut. Over time, the infection ate at his corneas. The vet reported, “Probably the kittens have gotten infected by the internal virus from their mom.”
But, there’s good news!

After a surgery to remove the damaged corneas and treatment with antibiotics, the orange tabby kitten opens his healing eyes and sees the world around him.

A Concerned Mother Waits
The kind volunteer who discovered the kitten returned to the scene where the kitten and his family were discovered. He was pleased to find the cats there. The mama cat still hunted for her missing baby though.

But, the place the cats were hanging out was far too dirty for a healing kitten to return to. The volunteer tidied up, clearing away garbage and placing a cat house on the site for the wild family.
When the kitten returned, he tumbled out of the carrier to see his mom. She is elated her darling kitten has returned with his eyes on the mend.

The kindhearted rescuer checks on the kitten and his family often, and this cat lover can’t help thinking, somehow that kitten will soon wind up in his home!
