Betty, Kit, Mae, Dottie, Doris, and Jimmy appear in adorable baseball uniforms and caps inspired by characters from the beloved baseball story, turning an adoption post into a lineup that’s hard to scroll past.
Behind the playful images, however, is a serious reason for getting these cats into the spotlight. A Cat’s Life Rescue wants more people paying attention to cats living outside, and its little baseball team certainly knows how to get noticed.
Meet the Feline Rockford Peaches
A Cat’s Life Rescue assembled an entire feline cast for its take on A League of Their Own. Betty, Kit, Mae, Dottie, Doris, and Jimmy were each reimagined as members of the Rockford Peaches, complete with the uniforms and baseball caps that make the theme instantly recognizable.
The result gives each cat a little character while tying the entire group together as one memorable team. Even someone who knows nothing about baseball has six very cute reasons to stop scrolling.
The theme is a nod to A League of Their Own, the story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League made famous to modern audiences by the 1992 movie. One of the film’s most recognizable moments gave audiences the now-famous declaration that there’s no crying in baseball. A Cat’s Life Rescue made one small adjustment for its version. Why Is There No Crying in Cat Rescue?
The rescue has a pretty simple answer to that question because there simply isn’t time. Its team says there are too many adorable cats living outside who still need help.
While the baseball theme makes the post playful, the organization used that attention to highlight an issue its rescuers encounter regularly. A Cat’s Life Rescue says cats living outside receive less attention and financial support compared with other animals in rescue work.
“Just like our Rockford Peaches, cats living outside are in a league of their own,” the rescue wrote. It’s a fitting description for a group of adoptable cats suddenly portrayed as one of baseball’s most recognizable teams.
Cats living outdoors can also have very different circumstances and needs. Some are socialized cats who may have been lost or abandoned and could eventually transition into homes, while unsocialized community cats may be candidates for trap-neuter-return programs and continued outdoor care.
Determining what each individual cat needs is part of the work rescuers do every day. Getting enough people to notice those cats and support that work can be another challenge entirely.
