Animals often amaze us with their capacity for love, especially when they step in to care for little ones that aren’t their own. That’s exactly what happened recently when a mother cat took two orphaned puppies under her wing.

This touching story unfolded at the Wilbarger Humane Society in Vernon, Texas. Employee Suzie Streit called it a “special little story” where a sad situation turned into something heartwarming.

A couple of months ago, the shelter welcomed a pregnant dog who soon gave birth to two male puppies named Yin and Yang. The mama dog was given all the care she needed and was a loving parent to her pups. Tragically, she passed away suddenly.

Suzie mentioned that they aren’t “100% sure” why the mother dog died. The staff quickly stepped in to help the orphaned puppies, feeding them with bottles day and night. However, they knew that finding a surrogate mother would give the puppies a better chance to thrive.

As luck would have it, a mother cat named Julie Newmar and her kitten, Eartha Kitt, arrived at the shelter. Even though it seemed unusual, the staff decided to see if Julie would accept the puppies.

“Cats are really good about when you can put somebody else’s babies on them and they’ll take other cat babies all the time. But we thought we’d try with the dogs,” Suzie explained to KFDX/KJTL.

To everyone’s surprise, the plan worked! Julie began caring for Yin and Yang just like they were her own kittens, even though they’re different species. Suzie noted that the cat doesn’t even “like dogs,” but her motherly instincts took over.

“She has done a really excellent job of adapting to what she needed to adapt to keep them going.”

This was the first time the shelter had placed puppies with a cat, but the new approach was a success and gave the puppies the best chance at survival.

“Some really good mommies will love their babies as their own, and we have a beautiful example of this, right now in our own backyard,” Suzie shared on Facebook as the puppies played with their unlikely new mom.

A heavily pregnant calico cat was abandoned in a plastic bin bag, left to die alone and in agony. Tragically, the cat went into labor before she passed, but none of her kittens survived. Sign this petition to urge authorities to investigate this heartless act!

Currently, the puppies and cats aren’t up for adoption, but the Wilbarger Humane Society says they’ll share updates if that changes.

What a heartwarming tale! Sometimes, a mother’s love knows no boundaries. We’re so happy these puppies have found a new mom to look after them!
