There’s always been a well-known rivalry between cats and dogs, often portrayed in cartoons as a playful but tense relationship. But is it possible for these two species to live together in harmony? One dog in particular, raised alongside cats, seems to have fully embraced feline behaviors, despite looking very much like a dog.

Bethany Castiller had been on a mission to adopt a dog from a shelter. Like many people, she had specific needs for the dog she would bring home. The top priority for her? The dog had to get along with cats, as she already had two feline companions. Understanding that not all dogs mesh well with cats, she had a more limited selection to choose from.

When she visited the shelter, it became clear which dog would be joining her family. In fact, it seemed as though the dog chose her! Reflecting on the experience, Bethany told The Dodo, “We joke that we didn’t really pick him, he picked us. When we went to the rescue shelter he had his back against the cage so we started petting him and he looked over his shoulder and gave direct eye contact and we just fell in love with the little guy.”

The shelter had assured Bethany that the dog, named Mako, was great with cats. And while that was technically true, the family soon discovered something even more unusual: Mako didn’t just tolerate the cats—he seemed to believe he was a cat! Pecan and Gizmo, the family’s two cats, instantly bonded with Mako, and the trio quickly became inseparable.

Mako’s cat-like behavior is so strong that Bethany suspects he may have been raised with cats before. For one thing, Mako never barks. Instead, his favorite activities include things you’d typically associate with cats—like lounging on countertops, climbing furniture, and even indulging in cat treats!

His feline tendencies have led to some hilarious moments in the household. Mako can often be found perched in places you’d never expect to find a dog—on top of the fridge, sitting on windowsills, or watching birds alongside his cat siblings. He’s always right by Pecan and Gizmo’s side, no matter where they are.

Mako’s bond with his cat siblings is undeniable. He’s constantly following them around, and even tries to mirror their actions. Bethany shared, “Whenever Mako sees the boys on the counters or cabinets he hops up to join them. He really just wants to be around the cats all the time. If he is not in the room with one of us humans, he’s with the cats.”

These poor kitties were rescued from an animal cruelty case where they were starved, locked in cages with inches of feces, and received no water or food. Now, these cats need your help!

Despite Mako’s quirky behavior, Bethany wouldn’t change a thing about him. The only thing she’s hoping is that he doesn’t start mimicking one notorious feline habit—bringing home “gifts” like dead birds! Other than that, she’s thrilled to have found such a perfect match for her family.
