Quilty the cat has always had the urge to be free. Not just himself, but he also believes that all the cats at the shelter should be free too! So, he has a bad habit of escaping and helping other cats escape too. It seems like a thoughtful and heartwarming thing to do, but the staff at the Friends for Life Animal Shelter in Texas are not amused. On multiple occasions, they have found the cats running loose thanks to Quilty’s mischievous plans. This cat just can’t be contained!

Multiple times, Quilty has escaped his enclosure and rushed to the senior cats room. Without hesitation, he sets his friends free. Sometimes he even does this multiple times a day! As talented as this sneaky cat is, the staff is trying their best to keep this from happening.

“Quilty will not be contained. And he has no shame,” posted Friends for Life.

Quilty-Proofing the Shelter

The staff members tried multiple attempts to “Quilty-proof” the cat room, but this smart cat always finds a way around it. They even tried to keep him in “solitary confinement” which has had the most success so far. The shelter posted a video of Quilty trying to paw his way out of his new space, and it’s clear that no enclosure is going to be able to contain Quilty forever.

“We have since Quilty-proofed the cat room, while he took a brief hiatus in the lobby. His roommates missed him while he was banished to the lobby,” posted Friends for Life. “They enjoyed their nighttime escapades around the shelter. The staff, however, did not miss the morning cat wrangling, so we’ll just have to agree to disagree there.”

Quilty actually has a history of freeing animals long before he was even at the shelter. At his previous home, he would repeatedly open the door for the dog. So, he definitely needs a home where he is free to roam around as he pleases.

Free Quilty!

After Friends for Life shared Quilty’s story on Facebook, he instantly gained lots of fans on all forms of social media. People began making posts with “#FreeQuilty” on them. The community stands by Quilty’s side and says that he should be free.

While the shelter is still doing what they can to stay on top of Quilty’s shenanigans, they have embraced the “#FreeQuilty” craze. The shelter even  used that hashtag on their new Facebook cover photo, which includes a photo of Quilty on it.

Ever since word spread about Quilty, more people have become interested in adopting him. On the shelter’s website, he is even listed under “reserved” which means that he might have finally found the perfect family. His new family better expect lots of escape acts though!
