A cat is usually pretty happy in a cozy cardboard box, but these two coddled kitties are living large in their own California casita! Their family rented out a $1,500 a month home for their precious pets, but it was more a matter of necessity to keep their family together than to spoil their cats.

When Victoria Amith went to college her two kitties, Tina and Louise, were not allowed in the dorms and went to live with her father instead. However, he quickly found that his fiancee’s two dogs did not get along with the cats at all and he needed a quick solution that didn’t involve a shelter kennel.

At that time his friend, David Callisch, was looking to rent out a small casita behind his home. It was an unusual idea to get the cats their own studio apartment, but Amith decided to give it a shot.

“He says, ‘Hey, would you mind if I–how about if I rented your place?’” Callisch told KPIX. “I said, ‘Well, what do you mean?’ He says, ‘Well, you wouldn’t have to deal with people all the time if you rented it, and I could stick the cats there. I’m close, I could come visit.’ I said, ‘Really?’”

He didn’t have feline tenants in mind, but was happy to do a favor for a friend when Amith called. Tina and Louise don’t have a kitchen, but they do have a cat tree and an Apple TV. They’re quiet, spend a lot of time napping, and keep a pretty tidy home. Cats are the perfect renters!

The rent may seem a little high, but not too high to keep their family together! Victoria Amith says their housing situation is only temporary until she moves out of the dorms and into a place of her own. Then, Tina and Louise will be on their way to college.
