When Chico was found as a stray in 2019, no one could have imagined the pampered life that awaited him. The once-homeless cat quickly embraced a life of comfort and luxury after being adopted into a loving home. “A friend of mine found him crying at his apartment door and called me for help,” Tori Roman, Chico’s mom, told The Dodo. “I took him in since I just moved into my own apartment. He’s a street cat turned spoiled indoor cat.”
Chico adjusted to his new lifestyle with ease, and it wasn’t long before he started demanding his favorite indulgence: a velvet clothes hanger. During a routine laundry day, Chico stumbled across the couple’s lone velvet hanger and became instantly captivated by its texture. From then on, the hanger was his most prized possession. It didn’t take long for Chico to develop a habit of sneaking into the closet to hunt for it himself.
“Our closet door is always open and we typically have to pull him away from sorting through the hangers … or give in and take off the article of clothing the velvet hanger has so Chico can play with it,” Roman explained. “It’s his world!”
But Chico’s world was turned upside down one fateful day. His canine brother, Murphy, a curious Pit Bull, decided he wanted in on the velvet hanger craze. Unfortunately, Murphy’s attempt at play ended in disaster — the beloved hanger was destroyed. Chico was devastated. He sat in the closet, staring up at the hangers in confusion, searching for his cherished treasure.
When Christmas was around the corner, Chico’s aunt asked what he might want as a gift. Roman wasted no time. She sent her a video of Chico sitting dejectedly under the closet hangers and made his request clear: he needed another velvet hanger.
Christmas came a little early that year, and Chico’s wish was granted. In a TikTok video capturing the moment, Roman joyfully announced, “Merry Christmas to Chico.” The velvet hanger had been replaced, and the kitty’s happiness was restored.
This wasn’t the first — or the last — time Chico’s beloved hanger had met its end thanks to Murphy. Roman admitted that her husband isn’t fond of the velvet hangers, but they keep buying them for Chico anyway. After all, his love for that soft, fuzzy hanger knows no bounds, and Chico wouldn’t be the same without them.
