5 Things You Didn’t Know About Abyssinians

| January 21, 2015

These distinctively ticked-coat kitties are known for their slender bodies, almond-shaped eyes and energetic personalities. This may not be a cat breed that you see every day, but you will certainly know one when you see them! Aside from their obvious good looks, here are 5 things you didn’t know about Abyssinians:

1. I am Smart

This breed is not only strikingly beautiful, but also incredibly intelligent. Abyssinians have been recorded as being some of the smartest cat breeds and are easily trainable to master a number of tricks. With their naturally playful and inquisitive nature these cats will come back for more and you won’t find them easily spooked or timid whatsoever.

2. Where do I come from?

Surprisingly, the exact origins of the Abyssinian is unclear. Some speculate that the breed originated in Ancient Egypt and it is known that the Abyssinian is one of the oldest breeds known. If you look at the ancient pyramids and ruins of Egypt the Abyssinian bares a striking resemblance to many of the sculptures with its pharaoh-like features. Genetic evidence of the Abyssinian suggests that their origins are linked to Southeast Asia, along the Indian Ocean coastal regions.

3. There’s nothing lazy about me

These cats are known for being energetic, but with all that energy comes nonstop action. Abyssinians enjoy playtime, climbing, jumping, and aren’t shy about their adventurous nature. These cats love attention and thrive in situations where their owner is present often. Leaving an Abyssinian alone for long periods of time on a regular basis is not recommended unless routinely coming home to a destroyed house is something that doesn’t bother you. These cats are well-bahaved in an environment conducive to their needs–constant companionship.

4. I am NOT a show cat

While this breed is stunning and highly intelligent, they do not do well as show cats and will not tolerate the idea. When Abyssinians are confined in a small space around lots of people, and other cats, they become very introverted and do not respond well as this is too much stimulation for them. Let this breed do its thing and don’t think to consider showing them off in a show sense just because they are so beautiful.

5. Life is meant to be enjoyed

Of all the cat breeds, the Abyssinian enjoys life to the fullest. These smart little cats can jump higher, climb further, and play harder than most cat breeds would ever think to consider. With their inherent zest for life these cats make a wonderful addition to a home with children or cat-friendly canines. The Abyssinians are not your lazy feline, and proven to be loyal and entertaining, assuring you there never to be a dull moment as long as they are around.
